PHOENIZ,AZ. - August 5, 2008 - Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. has published its corporate sustainability report, A World of Commitments: Working Toward Sustainable Development 2007. This is the first sustainability report prepared by the new Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. since its acquisition of Phelps Dodge Corporation last year. Reporting on the combined company, this document describes the company's environmental and social commitments and performance at its sites across the globe. The report is available on the company's web site at http://www.fcx.com/envir/index.htm.

The sustainability report includes a summary of the most material issues facing the company and the mining industry. These cover a broad range, from the economic impacts of land rights and compensation, to environmental challenges of energy conservation and tailings management, to social concerns surrounding artisanal mining and human rights. Through the sustainability report, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc. demonstrates the company's commitment to achieving outstanding financial results while supporting local communities and protecting and restoring the environment.

Working Toward Sustainable Development is designed to complement the company's reporting under the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. has prepared a web-based report following the GRI guidelines and containing quantitative data on economic, environmental and social performance. Data for 2006 are currently available on line; data for 2007 are undergoing third-party review and will be posted when the review is completed at http://www.fcx.com/envir/gri.htm.
