AMR Issues 2009 Corporate Responsibility Report

Published 06-14-10

Submitted by American Airlines

/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - AMR, the parent company of American Airlines and its regional affiliate, American Eagle Airlines, today released its second annual Corporate Responsibility Report (CRR), building on last year's report -- the first triple-bottom-line (economic, ecological, and social responsibility) report issued by a U.S.-based passenger airline.

American's 2009 CRR presents a summary of the company's performance related to its customers, employees, the environment, and the communities American serves. The report meets the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) application level C. GRI produces one of the world's most prevalent standards for sustainability - also known as ecological footprint - reporting.

"Our annual Corporate Responsibility Report gives us an opportunity to show our various constituents that, not only are we aware of our responsibilities as a global corporate citizen, but we're also taking them seriously and striving to meet expectations," said David Campbell, Vice President - Safety, Security & Environmental for American Airlines. "We believe our reporting process is one of continuous improvement, building on the past year and looking toward the future."

For the first time this year, the CRR is formatted as a Web-based publication rather than a print-formatted publication made available online. The report can be found under the "About Us" section of AA.com and is interactive and easy to navigate. Customers, the environment, employees, and our communities are addressed in separate navigable sections with case studies and highlights.

Highlights of the report include:

Customers

  • American became one of only four U.S. based air carriers to achieve a "Level 1" rating under a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-sponsored pilot program focused on improving airline safety management systems.

  • Achieved significant improvement in year-over-year on-time arrival rates for both American and American Eagle.

  • Continued investment in fleet renewal, with an average of one new Boeing 737 aircraft brought into service every 10 days. These modern aircraft offer enhanced entertainment systems, more power ports, and more overhead bin space than the MD-80s they are replacing.

Environment

  • Reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to jet fuel by 7.1 percent.

  • Fuel Smart program's run-rate of annual fuel savings stood at 108 million gallons at the end of the year.

  • Saved more than $10 million annually through energy-saving initiatives implemented by American's Utilities Management Council.

Employees

  • American Airlines and American Eagle reduced employee injuries over each of the past five years in terms of both absolute numbers and the rate of employee injuries.

  • Rolled out employee safety initiative, Partnership for Safety, at London's Heathrow airport, American's largest international operation.

  • Launched Wellness Incentive Program that rewards employees for taking steps to improve their health.

Community

  • In 2009, direct and indirect support for Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure® was estimated to be more than $12 million and involved more than 10,000 employee donors and volunteers.

  • Employees around the network celebrated the fifth anniversary of support for American Cancer Society's Relay For Life by reaching the $1 million mark in donations.

  • American Airlines flight attendants and other ground personnel helped gather $1.2 million from passengers under the UNICEF Change for Good program, also proudly supported by Airline Ambassadors International.
