Caterpillar's Singapore Reman Facility Receives Prestigious Award From the Building Construction Authority

/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Caterpillar Inc.'s (NYSE: CAT) recently constructed remanufacturing and components facility in Singapore has received the "Green Mark Gold Plus" award from the country's Building Construction Authority (BCA). Each year, the BCA honors the "most outstanding builders, developers, architects and engineers' contributions toward shaping an excellent environment in Singapore."

"We are incredibly honored to receive this recognition from the BCA," said Frank Li, Asia Pacific general manager for Caterpillar's Remanufacturing and Sustainable Solutions Division. "Successfully identifying and managing the environmental aspects of our operations in the communities where we live and work not only makes good business sense, but it is the right thing to do for our community, employees, customers and shareholders."

The Green Mark Gold Plus award is heavily focused on the environmentally sustainable aspects of the facility. Green Mark Gold Plus requires a 25 percent reduction in energy consumption that has been achieved by the building design, materials used and equipment efficiency.

Other sustainable features of the facility include:

  • Insulated metal cladding for the facade and roof

  • Recycled materials used for construction and office products

  • Energy efficient lighting and drainage systems

  • Rainwater harvesting tank for the ability to use recycled water for the remanufacturing process, irrigation and flushing

Caterpillar's remanufacturing operations return end-of-life components to their original "same-as-new" condition in terms of reliability, durability and performance. Remanufacturing reduces waste and minimizes the need for raw materials to produce new parts.

"Cat Reman continues to make one of the greatest contributions to sustainable development," said Mark DuBois, Singapore facility manager for the Remanufacturing and Sustainable Solutions Division. "By keeping nonrenewable resources in circulation for multiple lifetimes, we are not only eliminating waste but providing high-quality, affordable products to our customers."

The Reman facility in Singapore will expand Caterpillar's current remanufacturing operations in the Asia Pacific region, which includes an existing Cat Reman facility located in Shanghai, China. The 20,000 square meter (215,168 square foot) building will serve as the regional source for remanufactured major components, including mining truck engines, transmissions, final drives and torque converters. The Singapore facility is expected to be fully operational in early 2011.
