WASHINGTON, Sep. 11 /CSRwire/ - now a National Day of Service and Remembrance-American businesses and employees will join thousands of community volunteers in service to help those impacted by the economic recession. The business outreach, along with the expansion of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Together For Recovery campaign, is a response to President Barack Obama's 81-day "United We Serve" campaign that culminates on September 11.

"It's national campaigns such as the President's United We Serve and the U.S. Chamber's Together For Recovery that are bringing critical resources and helping hands to many communities across our country," says Stephen Jordan, the U.S. Chamber's senior vice president and executive director of the Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC).

Together For Recovery is an information clearinghouse that helps connect the 14 million unemployed Americans with free business offerings to help them find a job, make a mortgage payment, and access healthcare assistance. Today, the portal is expanded to include corporate citizenship in action. Nearly fifty business service projects are detailed in the portal, including Allstate, ARAMARK, IBM, Intel Corporation, Office Depot Foundation, and PAETEC.

"Their service demonstrates how business is part of the solution for economic recovery," Jordan said.

"GlaxoSmithKline employees are volunteering with nearly 1,000 school children in the Harlem Children's Zone to lead discussions about H1N1 prevention and other healthy lifestyle topics," said Bill Shore, GlaxoSmithKline director of U.S. Community Partnerships. "This is one of several GSK employee volunteer projects happening on the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance, giving just a glimpse of our employees' year-round commitment to community service."

The Together For Recovery portal provides lists of company volunteer projects slated for 9/11 and throughout the United We Serve campaign. Corporate citizens can find tips on how to find volunteer opportunities in their area and get advice for businesses planning volunteer events. The designation of September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance is a way for the nation to forever remember the lives of those lost and injured, and pay tribute to those who rose in service following the attacks on America.

BCLC is a 501(c)3 affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and is a resource and voice for businesses and their social and philanthropic interests. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business federation representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations of every size, sector, and region.
