MIDLAND, MI. - September 29, 2008 - The Dow Chemical Company has received the prestigious C. Everett Koop National Health Award from The Health Project for promoting a healthy workplace and for providing employees with the tools, knowledge and environment that encourage a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their families.

"Employee health is vital to the success and sustainability of the company, and protecting people is a key part of Dow's corporate values," said David Kepler, Dow Executive Vice President, Chief Sustainability Officer. "I am extremely proud to be recognized for our efforts towards improving employee health."

The award gave special notice to the success of Dow's LightenUP program, a four-year National Institutes of Health sponsored study, conducted to identify effective actions or programs and services that assist employees in managing their weight and overall health while at work. Dow was one of five winning companies which received the award during the 2008 Health Enhancement Research Organization (HERO) Conference.

"Dow is committed to helping address major health challenges worldwide and to be a driving force for positive change in health and human progress, and it starts by building and strengthening a culture of health with our own employees," said Dr. Catherine Baase, Dow's global director of health services.

The C. Everett Koop National Health Awards are given each year to worksite, community, or provider programs which have soundly documented improved health and decreased medical costs.

"Dow has a very impressive program that produced favorable changes in key health indicators like weight, BMI, BP, tobacco, and alcohol use," said James, F. Fries, M.D., chair of the award program's selection task force. "The program shows an organization with extensive organizational commitment to improved health, and that program is doing sound and effective work at the very cutting edge of excellence."
