HP (NYSE:HPQ) Tuesday will announce that it is working on a suite of technologies that address the growing problem of heat generation and energy use in increasingly powerful microprocessors and data centers. The proposed solutions include everything from reinventing HP's classic inkjet technology for cooling semiconductors to heat-sensing robots that patrol data centers, looking for ways to optimize energy use -- and reduce costs dramatically.

What: News conference and demos

When: Tuesday, Aug. 6, 10 a.m. PDT

Where: HP Labs, 1501 Page Mill Road, Palo Alto, Calif.

Who: Researchers Chandrakant Patel and Cullen Bash

What You'll See: Some of the technology behind the solutions, including a demonstration of a heat-sensing robot (a very distant cousin of the sci-fi versions) zipping around a data center, taking temperatures at different stops.
