Founding partnership enables Jordanian children to learn about communications and other topics in an interactive setting
AMMAN, JORDAN - May 23, 2007 – The Motorola Foundation, the independent charitable and philanthropic arm of Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced its largest-ever grant in the Middle East region to fund Jordan's new Children’s Museum.
The Children's Museum in Amman, initiated by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah, is a non-profit institution dedicated to education – specifically child and family learning. The Museum's mission is to create interactive learning experiences that have the power to encourage and nurture lifelong learning for children and their families.
The Motorola Foundation's sizeable grant of $900,000 makes it a founding partner to the Museum, which houses over 150 interactive exhibits across three theme areas -- Humankind, Technology, and The Natural World. Among other things, the grant will enable Museum visitors to learn more about the history of communications and the key role that technology plays in robotics, space exploration, as well as radio, satellite, and Internet communications. Funding covers exhibition development, installation, and upkeep for what will be the first-of-its-kind in interactive, family-focused museums in the Middle East.
"Given Motorola's strong heritage of innovation and the Motorola Foundation's focus on education, we are honored to support The Children’s Museum in its efforts to present important learning opportunities in a unique and fun environment," said Eileen Sweeney, director of the Motorola Foundation. "Through its programs, the Motorola Foundation strives to unleash the potential of the next generation of innovators and to excite young people about learning, which is why we chose to provide such a sizeable grant to this interactive Museum," she added.
The Motorola Foundation will also play an ongoing role in the development of The Children’s Museum as a member of the Board of Trustees. The funding for The Children’s Museum complements Motorola's commitment to the Jordanian market, where it has been operating directly for more than a decade.
"Jordan's focus on the development of its youth and the critical role of technology in today's world is synchronized ideally with an initiative like The Children’s Museum, and Motorola is proud to be a key donor to this new institution," said Hassan Tavakoli, vice-president, Middle East and Africa at Motorola. "Our support underscores Motorola’s continued commitment to education and the advancement of communications in the Middle East region," he added.
The Museum is opening its doors to the public in May 2007.
