Total Contribution of $3.75 Million Over 10 Years Used to Build 72 Schools
At a ceremony held in Beijing with over 700 Motorola employees present, Ed Zander, chairman and CEO of Motorola, presented the check to Gu Xiaojin, secretary-general of China Youth Development Foundation.
"Motorola is firmly committed to being a good corporate citizen in communities where we do business. We see this as our responsibility to give back to communities while also helping those in need, especially in developing nations," Zander, said at the ceremony. "It is remarkably satisfying to know that through donations such as this, along with the volunteer efforts by many of our employees, we can open doors to education and change the lives of many.
Motorola has been supporting the Hope Project, a national campaign to support poor children with their primary education, for the past decade. The cumulative total of approximately USD3.75 million has been used to build 72 elementary schools across China. About 12,000 pupils are now receiving formal education. As part of the program, Motorola helped establish six sample web schools which are multi-media classrooms synchronized with model schools in Beijing and Shanghai. Twenty five multi-media language labs were built in existing schools using standard low-frequency wireless teaching equipment. To date, over six hundred teachers have been trained and five hundred students have or will receive scholarships to finish high school or college.
Erkenjiang Tulahong, vice secretary of Youth League Center, vice president of All China Youth Federation, said: "Motorola is a landmark in the history of the Hope Project. Its deeds not only give our children equal opportunities for receiving education, but also reinforces in their minds that the world is full of people who love and care. Motorola, and many other philanthropic organizations, companies and individuals have indeed brought a bright future to those children, their families and communities."
Motorola won the Best Corporate Citizenship Practice Award in China in 2004. It is the highest recognition to Motorola's corporate citizenship effort and commitment to China. Since coming to China in 1987, Motorola has been instrumental in supporting higher education, offering disaster relief, sponsoring athletic programs and events and promoting environmental programs as well as helping China fight the SARS epidemic.
