Gift Will Further African American Education Through Scholarships
In celebration of Black History Month, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., on behalf of Wal-Mart stores and SAM'S CLUBS, has contributed $50,000 to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) to support the organization's scholarship programs.
"We are proud to partner with UNCF in order to positively impact African American education by providing more opportunities and better career preparation to African American students," said Coleman Peterson, executive vice president, people division, for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. "As the largest private employer of African Americans in the nation, Wal-Mart stores and SAM'S CLUBS have supported the mission of the UNCF for several years, and we look forward to our continued relationship."
Since its inception in 1944, UNCF has grown to become the nation's oldest and most successful African American education assistance organization. Through its fundraising efforts, the organization is able to enhance the capacities of its 39 member colleges and universities. Maurice Jenkins, UNCF regional vice president, added, "We commend Wal-Mart's continued participation with the UNCF for the benefit of African American students nationwide."
The contribution, awarded through Wal-Mart's Good.Works. initiative, will benefit several of UNCF's member colleges and universities throughout the country. Wal-Mart has supported education for many years through several programs, and in 2001 contributed more than $12.2 million to educational programs. Local community organizations are encouraged to establish communication and involvement with their local Wal-Mart stores or SAM'S CLUBS to explore possible funding opportunities.
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. operates more than 2,740 discount stores, Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets, and more than 500 SAM'S CLUBS in the United States. Internationally, the company operates more than 1,170 units. Wal-Mart employs 1.3 million associates worldwide. The company's securities are listed on the New York and Pacific stock exchanges under the symbol WMT. Last year Wal-Mart associates raised and contributed nearly $200 million to support
local communities and non-profit organizations. FORTUNE magazine has named Wal-Mart the third "most admired" company in America and one of the 100 best companies to work for in the United States, and Americans named Wal-Mart the company they think of first in supporting local causes and issues, according to Cone, Inc.
