Triple-bottom-line report tells company's story "From the Ground Up"

SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN - Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PotashCorp) today began distribution of its newly published Sustainability Report - From the Ground Up - which documents the company's economic, social and environmental performance in 2003.

This is PotashCorp's follow-up to its inaugural Sustainability Report which was released approximately one year ago. From the Ground Up builds on that first effort, which was judged as the best Sustainability Report in the United States by the Business Marketing Association and PR News.

As detailed in From the Ground Up, PotashCorp is committed to the ongoing development of sustainable business practices, which it views as critical to its long-term success. Underscoring this commitment are the four senior executives who comprise the company's Sustainability Committee. They have a mandate to oversee the development of a sustainability framework for PotashCorp and provide annual public reporting.

"Sustainability continues to be at the heart of PotashCorp's vision and values, and showing leadership in sustainability is central to the continued growth and success of the company," said President and Chief Executive Officer Bill Doyle. "This second report takes our initial effort one step further with site-specific examples of how PotashCorp's value system is closely aligned with sustainable performance measures. We also are reporting our sustainability goals for the coming year, and will report our progress toward achieving them in 2005."

Among the report's highlights:

  • A record-low recordable-injury frequency rate in 2003,
  • Direct Green House Gas emissions information,
  • Safety and environmental performance data for each operating site,
  • Expanded section of governance structure and management systems, describing how sustainability is integrated into the organization.

The report was prepared using guidelines established by the United Nations sanctioned Global Reporting Initiative. Additional copies of the document can be ordered from PotashCorp's U.S. Administrative Headquarters in Northbrook, Illinois or viewed online at www.potashcorp.com.

PotashCorp is the world's largest fertilizer enterprise producing the three primary plant nutrients and a leading supplier to three distinct market categories: agriculture, with the largest capacity in the world in potash, fourth largest in phosphate and third largest in nitrogen; animal nutrition, with the world's largest capacity in phosphate feed ingredients; and industrial chemicals, as the largest global producer of industrial nitrogen products and one of only three North American suppliers of industrial phosphates.
