SC Johnson’s Patented Greenlist™ Process Offered Royalty-Free to Companies Seeking to Improve Their Environmental Profile

RACINE, WI - February 20, 2007 – SC Johnson announced today that Five Winds International has become the company’s third-party administrator to license SC Johnson’s Greenlist™ process to other companies royalty-free. Greenlist™ is SC Johnson’s award winning, patented environmental classification system. Under the agreement, Five Winds will work with companies interested in licensing Greenlist™ to improve the environmental profile of their products.

“SC Johnson is very pleased with this partnership because we will now easily be able to share Greenlist™ to help other companies measure and improve the environmental impact of their products,” said Scott Johnson, vice president of global environmental and safety actions for SC Johnson. “We’re committed to environmental leadership and to the principle of sharing our sustainability practices so other companies can adapt or adopt our learnings into their operations. The true winner is the environment, which is our goal.”

In 2001, SC Johnson devised Greenlist™, a raw material rating system, to transform the way the company measures, tracks and advances its products to further the company’s longstanding commitment to environmentally responsible products. Through Greenlist™, SC Johnson continues to lead the way with responsible raw material choices. In 2006, Greenlist™ was recognized with two presidential honors – the Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership and the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award.

SC Johnson has consulted with Five Winds International on various product sustainability practices, including the initial development of Greenlist™. “SC Johnson has a legacy of environmental responsibility, and we at Five Winds are very pleased to be their partner in helping other company’s use Greenlist™ to reduce their environmental footprint,” said Jim Fava, managing director of Five Winds International. “From our perspective, Greenlist™ is one of the most exciting breakthroughs in corporate sustainability over the last few years, and it’s wonderful that SC Johnson is willing to share this process with any company, including its competitors. Greenlist™ provides tremendous environmental leadership opportunities for companies, and it is a good fit with what we at Five Winds call ‘value without burden’.”

As an environmental leader, SC Johnson continues to uphold the sustainability principle of transparency. Sharing the Greenlist™ process with all companies, including competitors, is one more way the company is sharing its product stewardship efforts. Because the Greenlist™ process is highly flexible and adaptable, companies licensing Greenlist™ will be able to adapt the patented process to reflect their own unique chemicals and materials. The companies will also get a proven management system of establishing, evaluating and reporting on performance against measurable objectives. Company’s looking to license Greenlist™ must be willing to establish measurable goals and report on them annually. As part of the collaboration, in addition to evaluating and recommending potential licensee candidates to SC Johnson, Five Winds International will extensively train participating companies on the Greenlist™ process and its implementation.

Greenlist™ is a reflection of SC Johnson’s steadfast commitment to the environment and spirit of innovation. From being a pioneer in the introduction of water-based aerosols in 1955 to its leadership as the first company to remove chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) from all aerosol products three years ahead of the 1978 U.S. mandate, Greenlist™ is the company’s most recent voluntary innovation to safeguard our shared environment. Greenlist™ goes beyond regulatory requirements to meet SC Johnson’s own high standards for product formulation.

As a patented system, Greenlist™ (US Patent Nos. 6,973,362 B2 and 7,096,084B2) formalizes the classification of raw materials used in SC Johnson’s products according to their impact on the environment and human health. To that end, Greenlist™ has helped SC Johnson continue to phase out certain raw materials, and use more materials considered to be environmentally “better” and “best.” The result is a process that gives SC Johnson scientists around the globe ready access to a rating of ingredients in any new product or reformulation and enables them to continuously improve the environmental profile of the company’s products. Additionally, consumers get a more environmentally responsible product along with the performance excellence they trust and expect from SC Johnson.
