Company named 18 times to the list and ranks in top ten for fourth consecutive year
Racine, Wis. (Sept. 25, 2006) - At SC Johnson, being "A Family Company" is good news for working moms. For the fourth consecutive year, SC Johnson ranks in the top 10 among the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers," according to Working Mother magazine. The publication today releases its 21st annual compilation of "family-friendly" corporations, and this year marks the 18th time SC Johnson has been included on the list.
"This wonderful recognition from Working Mother celebrates the special work culture that is SC Johnson," said Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of SC Johnson. "We work hard at creating a great, flexible work environment. By doing so, all of the people at SC Johnson, not just working parents, can focus on their family and the needs of the business. On behalf of SC Johnson and as a working parent myself, I applaud all the companies making an important difference for families everywhere."
In bestowing this year's top honors, Working Mother gave particular weight to the areas of flexible scheduling and leave time for new parents. The magazine also took into consideration family friendly programs, child care, company culture, advancement of women and compensation.
SC Johnson recently broke ground on an expansion project at the company's Childcare Learning Center - one of the nation's first childcare centers in 1985 for the exclusive use of its employees and their families. The addition is 9,600 square feet and will add 10 new classrooms and include a sunroom for reading and group activities and a conference room for parent teacher conferences. The building is scheduled to open in January 2007 and will continue to ensure that employees' children will not have to be placed on a waiting list. In 2003, the Center underwent its first major expansion and currently serves over 300 children.
"SC Johnson is exceptional for its continuing commitment to working mothers, and we salute them for making the 100 Best for the 18th time," said Carol Evans, CEO of Working Mother Media. "Every year we see companies upping the ante, establishing new paradigms for quality of life among their employees and redefining the status quo for workplaces across the country. Among the many worthy entrants, the winners really set the gold standard."
"It's rewarding to see the great programs we have in place working to help SC Johnson's employees be their best at home and at work," said Gayle P. Kosterman, Executive Vice President - Worldwide Human Resources of SC Johnson. "The flexibility the company offers and the tremendous list of programs from the award winning childcare center to no meeting Fridays to sabbaticals are just some of what makes SC Johnson such a great place to work and a marketplace success."
SC Johnson has long been recognized as an employer of choice. Earlier this year, SC Johnson was ranking in the top ten on FORTUNE magazine's list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For in America." The company also was named to the "Corporate 100" list of top companies for Latinos by Hispanic magazine, was among DiversityInc's list of top 50 companies for diversity and was recently named by AARP Magazine as a top place to work for people over 50.
To apply for the Working Mother 100 Best, SC Johnson provided Working Mother magazine with detailed information on seven areas of work/life balance including workforce profile, compensation, child care, flexibility, time off and leaves, family-friendly programs and company culture. SC Johnson completed a 500+-question application, the most rigorous of its kind, which checked the availability, tracking and usage of programs to support working mothers, the accountability of managers to implement programs and the successful advancement of women into top paying jobs, board position and management ranks. SC Johnson was also required to submit benefits handbooks and supporting documentation.
The 100 best companies will be honored in October during a special ceremony at the WorkLife Congress in New York. The complete list of the 2006 Working Mother 100 Best Companies can be found at www.workingmother.com.
