New York - The Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBC) applauds the joint program of member company Bristol-Myers Squibb and Baylor College of Medicine that will provide medical care for African children with HIV/AIDS. Under the multi-part program, a pediatric AIDS corps will be created to send up to 250 doctors to Africa to treat approximately 80,000 children over five years and to train local health care professionals. In addition, the $40 million program will provide funding for four new children's clinical centers of excellence. Bristol-Myers Squibb has agreed to commit approximately $30 million, while Baylor College of Medicine will commit $10 million.

The new program is the latest addition to Bristol-Myers Squibb's SECURE THE FUTURE initiative which has already made 200 grants totaling $120 million in sub-Saharan Africa, and Baylor College of Medicine's International Pediatric AIDS Initiative, which built and operates several of the world's largest pediatric HIV/AIDS treatment centers in developing countries in Africa and Eastern Europe.

Bristol-Myers Squibb also announced that it is reducing the price of pediatric formulations of HIV medicines in the world's least developed countries to expand access to treatment.

"Pediatric AIDS medicines are vital in providing a future for over 2 million children currently infected with HIV/AIDS."
