ICMM Demonstrates Leadership Through Engagement and Strategic Partnerships
Our 2005 annual review is published highlighting the organization's significant achievements throughout the year. The report records how our activities provide a benchmark for sustainable development performance in the mining and metals sector. A full copy of the annual review is available at our website (www.icmm.com) or can be obtained via the media contact recorded below.
2005 highlights include:
Transparency. The ICMM Council committed to reporting on the 10 Principles of sustainable development in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative Guidelines and became the first industry body to commit to this level of public accountability and transparency.
Environment. We published Financial Assurance for Mine Closure and Reclamation. Environmental Financial Assurance (EFA) Measures provide a guarantee to governments and communities that adequate resources will be available to meet the cost of mine closure.
Socio-economic development. We published the Community Development Toolkit which is designed to support socio-economic development at a local level by demonstrating how mining and mineral processing activities can contribute to sustainable community development.
Materials Stewardship. The core elements of ICMM's chemical management policies were recognized and supported by the UN Preparatory Committee for the development of a Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).
