Energy, Waste and Emissions Reductions On-Track to Achieve 2012 Goals

CINCINNATI, OH. - November 20, 2008 - The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) today released its 2008 Sustainability Report, highlighting the company's long-term commitment to responsible growth and progress toward meeting its established sustainability goals. Titled "Designed to Innovate...Sustainably," the comprehensive report outlines P&G's approach to sustainable development including how the company is working with key stakeholders and employees to further its sustainability progress. The report is available for viewing at http://www.pg.com/sustainability.

"Sustainable development is built from a simple idea – it's about ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come," said A.G. Lafley, P&G chairman of the board and chief executive officer. "This idea is at the heart of P&G's purpose and helps us to produce meaningfully sustainable results for each of the three billion consumers we touch each day."

P&G is on track to meet or exceed five-year goals established in 2007. These goals are detailed at http://www.pg.com/sustainability. They included specific, measurable objectives for developing sustainable innovation products, improving the environmental profile of P&G operations and facilities, and improving lives through the company's Live, Learn and Thrive corporate social responsibility programs.

Highlights of the P&G 2008 Sustainability Report include:

  • During the last year, P&G operations reduced water consumption by seven percent, energy usage by six percent, CO2 emissions by eight percent and waste disposal by 21 percent (per unit of production). Including last year's results, P&G has reduced water consumption by 51 percent, energy usage by 46 percent, CO2 emissions by 52 percent and waste disposal by 50 percent since 2002 (per unit of production).

  • P&G achieved $2.05 billion in cumulative sales of products with a significantly reduced environmental impact.

  • P&G reached more than 60 million children through Live, Learn and Thrive – P&G's global cause that focuses the company's social investments on efforts that improve the lives of children in need ages 0–13.

  • P&G delivered 430 million liters of clean drinking water through the Children's Safe Drinking Water program – water which prevented an estimated 18 million days of disease and saved 2,442 lives.
"The progress we've made this past year would not have been possible without the dedication and conviction of P&G's employees worldwide," said Susan Arnold, president of P&G's global business units and executive sponsor of sustainability. "Combining their efforts with P&G's global scale benefits our consumers and retail customers around the world, while simultaneously improving our sustainability profile."

Added Len Sauers, vice president of global sustainability, "With our science-based, business-building approach, we're bringing a steady stream of product and operational innovations that allow consumers to make more sustainable choices, without having to accept trade-offs in performance or value."

P&G's sustainability report was prepared using the Global Reporting Initiative's (GRI) G3 guidelines. The GRI report is the most widely used sustainability reporting framework that includes the principles and indicators global organizations use to measure and report economic, environmental and social performance.
