Each year, participants are invited to create PSAs explaining why “Cash is Best” when donating to international disaster relief efforts.  
When disaster strikes internationally, Americans want to help. While well intentioned, most people are unaware that donating material goods can hinder relief efforts by creating logistical challenges and overwhelming local infrastructure. Monetary donations to trusted organizations working on the ground helps support international disaster relief efforts and makes a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by these devastating events.  
The 2024 winning PSAs were selected from submissions received from universities and community colleges across the country in three categories: video, static image and GIFs.

A panel of experts from the fields of humanitarian assistance, communications and design served as volunteer judges: Oktay Dogramaci, former vice president of PayPal Giving, CTO and co-founder of MissionFish; Hillary Hoffower, editor and writer; Jeff Odom, director of digital marketing for IndyCar; Gretel Truong, producer; and Marcia Wong, deputy assistant to the administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance.

Winning static PSAs and GIFs have been featured in Forbes, Rolling Stone, The Boston Herald, and the Arizona Republic, to name a few publications.

Summary 
Schrödinger has published its second annual Corporate Sustainability report, which provides a comprehensive overview of the company's progress developing and executing on its strategy for addressing environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters. 
Throughout 2023, the company advanced every aspect of its ESG performance and created a road map that includes setting goals for each of its identified material ESG topics in alignment with its Corporate Sustainability strategy. Schrödinger Shares Corporate Sustainability Progress in 2023 Report

Boston Scientific released its <a href="https://www.bostonscientific.com/en-US/corporate-responsibility.html" target="_blank">2023 Performance Report</a> highlighting the company’s actions to improve patient outcomes while prioritizing environmental, social and governance (ESG) progress.

Boston Scientific Reports 2023 Actions Toward a Healthier, More Equitable World

Achieving digital equity is at the heart of the work we do because we know how life-changing a reliable home Internet connection can be in today’s digital economy.

Through the federal government’s <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/acp" target="_blank">Affordable Connectivity Program</a> (ACP), more than 23 million households across America – <a href="https://www.bsgco.com/acp-fact-sheet" target="_blank">nearly 50% of which are military families</a> – are able to get online at little to no cost. Unfortunately, the ACP is only fully funded through April and is expected to lapse by May. This puts at risk all the progress we have made in keeping Americans connected to this critical resource.

<a href="https://corporate.comcast.com/stories/funding-affordable-connectivity-program-critical-for-our-countrys-future" target="_blank">As I said in January</a>, we believe that Congress and the White House should find a way to extend the ACP so people can stay connected and benefit from the Internet for education, healthcare, workforce development, veterans’ assistance, and so much more.

At Comcast, we remain committed to doing our part to help including:

Partial ACP Credit – To help ease the transition, all ACP customers will receive a federally funded ACP credit of $14 on their Xfinity bills ($35 on Tribal lands) for the month of May as the government program winds down.

Internet Essentials – We continue to offer <a href="https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/internet-essentials" target="_blank">Internet Essentials</a> – our reliable, low-cost high-speed Internet service – for $9.95/month. That is the exact same price it has been since 2011, when it was first introduced, despite inflation, while speeds have increased five times for no additional cost. Millions of Americans have been connected to Internet Essentials, which has become the largest and most comprehensive private-sector Internet adoption program in the country. Now through June 30, customers can get online for $10/month with no additional equipment required, no long-term commitments, or any cancellation fees.

Lift Zones – Individuals, whether they’re our customers or not, can access one of our more than 1,250 WiFi-connected <a href="https://corporate.comcast.com/impact/digital-equity/lift-zones" target="_blank">Lift Zones</a> across the country. Working with our extensive network of nonprofit partners, Lift Zones provide free Internet access in neighborhood locations like nonprofits, community centers, gyms, and parks and recreation facilities. Additionally, many locations have <a href="https://corporate.comcast.com/impact/project-up/digital-navigators" target="_blank">Digital Navigators</a> – trusted and trained individuals who help them get online and learn digital skills.

Internet Essentials Partnership Program – Our <a href="https://corporate.comcast.com/impact/digital-equity/internet-essentials-partnership-program" target="_blank">Internet Essentials Partnerships Program</a> (IEPP) provides the opportunity for school districts and other organizations to fund and connect large numbers of students and families to broadband access at home. Since 2020, IEPP has collaborated with hundreds of entities across the country to help connect K-12 students.

Comcast Remains Dedicated to Closing the Digital Divide

Festivals can generate massive amounts of waste, from attendees discarding single use-items like plastic cups and food containers, to emitting high levels of Co2 emissions from the generators powering each stage.

AEG’s Goldenvoice is challenging convention by pioneering sustainable practices in festival organizing and utilizing its three-day music festival in Long Beach, CA, Cali Vibes, as a blueprint for greening their own festival operations.

Now for the second consecutive year, Goldenvoice’s Cali Vibes, has partnered with Three Squares Inc., a Los Angeles-based environmental consulting firm, to develop a comprehensive sustainability program aimed at reducing emissions, minimizing waste, educating attendees and staff, and fostering eco-friendly practices throughout its operations.

<ul><li>Food Waste Reduction – All extra food at the festival was donated to local community shelters. Additionally, roughly 20% to 30% of the food vendors at Cali Vibes provided vegan menu options, with all vendors required to offer at least one vegetarian option.</li>
	<li>Reusable Cup Program: Through its partnership with r.World, the festival utilized r.Cup reusable cups and eliminated approximately 300,000 single-use plastic cups. Water was served in aluminum cans, and refill stations were located throughout the festival.</li>
	<li>Reducing Energy: To reduce on site energy consumption, Cali Vibes sourced Overdrive Energy Solutions’ battery power stations to capture solar energy to power light towers in parking lots, merch stations and bathroom zones. Energy efficient lighting systems relied on battery-powered LED lights. By sourcing locally-produced renewable diesel to power generators and heavy equipment, Cali Vibes eliminated 43 tons of carbon emissions at this year’s festival.</li>
	<li>Reducing Emissions: The festival promoted public transit use by offering attendees free or discounted public transit rides through a partnership with L.A. Metro. Festival organizers also implemented a “no idling” rule to reduce emissions by requiring cars and gas-powered golf carts to be turned off when not in motion.</li>
</ul>In addition to greening its festival operations, the team at Goldenvoice partnered with AEG's Social Impact department to nurture the next generation of environmental stewards by hosting an AEG Futures event at the festival. The career program brought together [50] underrepresented high school and college students to learn about sustainability-focused career opportunities available in live entertainment. The program offered students a chance to learn from industry experts about career opportunities, meet sustainability vendors who spoke to them about the specific Cali Vibes initiatives, participate in mentoring sessions, and explore the festival grounds, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainable practices in the live music space.

Goldenvoice’s Cali Vibes Executes Comprehensive Sustainability Program

Each scholarship recipient demonstrated exceptional academic performance in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, and a passion for community impact. They represent eight universities across China, including Tianjin University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Wuhan’s Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

Otis has now helped more than 400 top-performing female university STEM students in China gain access to opportunities in innovation and technology through scholarships since 2021. These initiatives aim to inspire broader and more diverse talent to pursue STEM fields and join our industry, and are in line with our overarching Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) efforts.

Earlier this year, Otis provided educational robots to 10 primary and middle schools that excelled in the 18th CSCLF’s Invention Award. First held in 2018, the day was created to help recognise and celebrate the importance that recycling plays in preserving our precious primary resources and securing the future of our planet. It’s a campaign that resonates deeply with our commitment to sustainability here at Lenovo, helping to encourage people to reuse, recycle and reduce waste.

According to Global Recycling Day[1], the ‘Seventh Resource’ (recyclables) saves over 700 million tonnes in CO2 emissions each year, and this is projected to increase to 1 billion tons by 2030. There is no doubt that recycling is on the front line in the fight to save the future of our planet and humanity.

Waste is a huge issue for the environment, and the need to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns is recognised in the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Developments[2]. In keeping with Global Recycling Day’s ambitions, the Agenda for Sustainable Developments includes the target to substantially reduce waste generation by 2030 through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.

It’s a cause that strikes a chord at the heart of Lenovo. We are already at the forefront of innovation when it comes to sustainable solutions, and we’re passionate to show how our initiatives align seamlessly with the objectives of Global Recycling Day.

There are plenty of recycling options that manufacturers can consider when it comes to making IT hardware and devices. These include post-industrial recycled content (PIC), post-consumer recycled content (PCC), closed-loop post-consumer recycled content (CL PCC), ocean bound plastics (OBP) and recycled metals.

PCC comes from products that would have otherwise ended up in landfills, such as food containers or plastic bottles. Notebooks, tablets, smartphones and other IT solutions have very specific structural, performance and cosmetic requirements, and this results in numerous challenges when it comes to the use of PCC. As such, manufacturers need to work closely with suppliers to develop and qualify new grades of plastic resins previously unavailable to the IT industry.

CL PCC is constructed from PCC sourced from end-of-life IT and electronics equipment. Once again it’s critical that manufacturers work closely with material suppliers and third-party certification authorities to develop suitable material processes. Certification authorities include the ‘Approved Recycling Standard’, the ‘Quality Assurance Operation Requirements’, and the ‘Recovery Ratio’, which help to validate sources of waste and control processes using a hierarchical waste product traceability scheme.

Using such engineered materials saves natural resources and energy that would have gone into manufacturing new plastics, and it diverts these materials from landfills as well, helping to sustain the demand for plastic materials from IT products.

OBP is also making a big impact when it comes to recycling. OBP is derived from abandoned plastic waste, such as milk jugs, shopping bags, and laundry detergent bottles, actively mitigating the alarming flow of plastics into our oceans and helping to protect our planet’s delicate ecosystem.

Lenovo has embraced all of the recycled solutions above as part of its portfolio, and since early 2005, Lenovo’s cumulative total use of recycled plastics[3] in products has reached over 130 million kilograms (gross) containing PIC, PCC, and/or CL PCC, with net PCC of approximately 54 million kilograms and net CL PCC of more than 18 million kilograms.

Plastics aren’t the only materials that can be recycled, and recycled metal can also help to reduce mining and consumption of natural resources, providing potential to reduce energy and emissions alongside. In FY 2022/2023, Lenovo expanded the use of recycled aluminium and magnesium to more of its notebook products[4], including up to 50% recycled aluminium in the cover of the Yoga 6 Gen 7, and up to 90% recycled magnesium for the A/C/D covers of the ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4.

Embracing the circular economy and creating a lasting legacy

Along with recycling materials, it’s important that we look for additional ways to give devices themselves a second lease of life. <a href="https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/servers-storage/solutions/asset-recovery-services/" target="_blank">Lenovo’s asset recovery service</a> (ARS) is a great example, designed to maximise the reuse, recycling, and/or environmental disposal of replaced and end-of-life products, parts, and waste.

Asset recovery services can help customers minimize the data security risks of managing the disposal of unwanted IT equipment, and in some situations older computers can be resold or reused. Through Certified Refurbished PCs, Lenovo helps extend device lifecycles, giving these devices a new purposeful life. Not only does this reduce environmental impact but it can also help customers to offset some costs of an IT refresh.

As we continue to pave the way towards a more sustainable future, we need to embrace the circular economy in everything we do, helping to reduce waste and emissions. Together, we can shape a future where sustainability is not just an aspiration but a guiding principle, that creates a legacy for generations to come.
