Each year, participants are invited to create PSAs explaining why “Cash is Best” when donating to international disaster relief efforts.  
When disaster strikes internationally, Americans want to help. While well intentioned, most people are unaware that donating material goods can hinder relief efforts by creating logistical challenges and overwhelming local infrastructure. Monetary donations to trusted organizations working on the ground helps support international disaster relief efforts and makes a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by these devastating events.  
The 2024 winning PSAs were selected from submissions received from universities and community colleges across the country in three categories: video, static image and GIFs.

A panel of experts from the fields of humanitarian assistance, communications and design served as volunteer judges: Oktay Dogramaci, former vice president of PayPal Giving, CTO and co-founder of MissionFish; Hillary Hoffower, editor and writer; Jeff Odom, director of digital marketing for IndyCar; Gretel Truong, producer; and Marcia Wong, deputy assistant to the administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance.

Winning static PSAs and GIFs have been featured in Forbes, Rolling Stone, The Boston Herald, and the Arizona Republic, to name a few publications.

Summary 
Schrödinger has published its second annual Corporate Sustainability report, which provides a comprehensive overview of the company's progress developing and executing on its strategy for addressing environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters. 
Throughout 2023, the company advanced every aspect of its ESG performance and created a road map that includes setting goals for each of its identified material ESG topics in alignment with its Corporate Sustainability strategy. Schrödinger Shares Corporate Sustainability Progress in 2023 Report

Boston Scientific released its <a href="https://www.bostonscientific.com/en-US/corporate-responsibility.html" target="_blank">2023 Performance Report</a> highlighting the company’s actions to improve patient outcomes while prioritizing environmental, social and governance (ESG) progress.

Boston Scientific Reports 2023 Actions Toward a Healthier, More Equitable World

Achieving digital equity is at the heart of the work we do because we know how life-changing a reliable home Internet connection can be in today’s digital economy.

Through the federal government’s <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/acp" target="_blank">Affordable Connectivity Program</a> (ACP), more than 23 million households across America – <a href="https://www.bsgco.com/acp-fact-sheet" target="_blank">nearly 50% of which are military families</a> – are able to get online at little to no cost. Unfortunately, the ACP is only fully funded through April and is expected to lapse by May. This puts at risk all the progress we have made in keeping Americans connected to this critical resource.

<a href="https://corporate.comcast.com/stories/funding-affordable-connectivity-program-critical-for-our-countrys-future" target="_blank">As I said in January</a>, we believe that Congress and the White House should find a way to extend the ACP so people can stay connected and benefit from the Internet for education, healthcare, workforce development, veterans’ assistance, and so much more.

At Comcast, we remain committed to doing our part to help including:

Partial ACP Credit – To help ease the transition, all ACP customers will receive a federally funded ACP credit of $14 on their Xfinity bills ($35 on Tribal lands) for the month of May as the government program winds down.

Internet Essentials – We continue to offer <a href="https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/internet-essentials" target="_blank">Internet Essentials</a> – our reliable, low-cost high-speed Internet service – for $9.95/month. That is the exact same price it has been since 2011, when it was first introduced, despite inflation, while speeds have increased five times for no additional cost. Millions of Americans have been connected to Internet Essentials, which has become the largest and most comprehensive private-sector Internet adoption program in the country. Now through June 30, customers can get online for $10/month with no additional equipment required, no long-term commitments, or any cancellation fees.

Lift Zones – Individuals, whether they’re our customers or not, can access one of our more than 1,250 WiFi-connected <a href="https://corporate.comcast.com/impact/digital-equity/lift-zones" target="_blank">Lift Zones</a> across the country. Working with our extensive network of nonprofit partners, Lift Zones provide free Internet access in neighborhood locations like nonprofits, community centers, gyms, and parks and recreation facilities. Additionally, many locations have <a href="https://corporate.comcast.com/impact/project-up/digital-navigators" target="_blank">Digital Navigators</a> – trusted and trained individuals who help them get online and learn digital skills.

Internet Essentials Partnership Program – Our <a href="https://corporate.comcast.com/impact/digital-equity/internet-essentials-partnership-program" target="_blank">Internet Essentials Partnerships Program</a> (IEPP) provides the opportunity for school districts and other organizations to fund and connect large numbers of students and families to broadband access at home. Since 2020, IEPP has collaborated with hundreds of entities across the country to help connect K-12 students.

Comcast Remains Dedicated to Closing the Digital Divide

Festivals can generate massive amounts of waste, from attendees discarding single use-items like plastic cups and food containers, to emitting high levels of Co2 emissions from the generators powering each stage.

AEG’s Goldenvoice is challenging convention by pioneering sustainable practices in festival organizing and utilizing its three-day music festival in Long Beach, CA, Cali Vibes, as a blueprint for greening their own festival operations.

Now for the second consecutive year, Goldenvoice’s Cali Vibes, has partnered with Three Squares Inc., a Los Angeles-based environmental consulting firm, to develop a comprehensive sustainability program aimed at reducing emissions, minimizing waste, educating attendees and staff, and fostering eco-friendly practices throughout its operations.

<ul><li>Food Waste Reduction – All extra food at the festival was donated to local community shelters. Additionally, roughly 20% to 30% of the food vendors at Cali Vibes provided vegan menu options, with all vendors required to offer at least one vegetarian option.</li>
	<li>Reusable Cup Program: Through its partnership with r.World, the festival utilized r.Cup reusable cups and eliminated approximately 300,000 single-use plastic cups. Water was served in aluminum cans, and refill stations were located throughout the festival.</li>
	<li>Reducing Energy: To reduce on site energy consumption, Cali Vibes sourced Overdrive Energy Solutions’ battery power stations to capture solar energy to power light towers in parking lots, merch stations and bathroom zones. Energy efficient lighting systems relied on battery-powered LED lights. By sourcing locally-produced renewable diesel to power generators and heavy equipment, Cali Vibes eliminated 43 tons of carbon emissions at this year’s festival.</li>
	<li>Reducing Emissions: The festival promoted public transit use by offering attendees free or discounted public transit rides through a partnership with L.A. Metro. Festival organizers also implemented a “no idling” rule to reduce emissions by requiring cars and gas-powered golf carts to be turned off when not in motion.</li>
</ul>In addition to greening its festival operations, the team at Goldenvoice partnered with AEG's Social Impact department to nurture the next generation of environmental stewards by hosting an AEG Futures event at the festival. The career program brought together [50] underrepresented high school and college students to learn about sustainability-focused career opportunities available in live entertainment. Take MAC Cosmetics, for example. When it first launched back in 1984, there was little education around recycling best practices and how plastic usage might impact the planet. Understanding this, in 1990, the company launched the industry's first take-back program <a href="https://go.skimresources.com/?id=1025X1701743&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.maccosmetics.com%2Fback-to-mac&amp;xcust=___psv__t_r__d_d_&amp;=___psv__p_49100940__t_w_" target="_blank">Back to MAC</a>, where you could bring your finished tube of lipstick to any MAC store and they would recycle it for you. Similarly, looking to the future, brands will need to reimagine the wheel.

"That was 34 years ago, and it was revolutionary at the time, but it was merely taking what we can and making it better," says <a href="https://www.instagram.com/aidamood/?ref=popsugar.com&amp;=___psv__p_49100940__t_w_" target="_blank">Aida Moudachirou-Rebois</a>, general manager for the brand. "Even today it's hard to recycle cosmetics because each part is made of many different pieces and materials. But now when we design the product we make sure we have sustainability in mind. We use post-recycled material and all our secondary packaging is made of FSC carton boxes. We have designed our store to be sustainable with the energy that we use, and we've [prioritized] our direct-to-consumer business to reduce our carbon footprint. We are constantly looking for ways to improve."

What Does “Sustainable Beauty” Really Look Like Today?

Long-distance speedskating requires determination, rigorous training and a long-term plan to reach the finish line. Tiemen Noordam is using skills from his role at Eastman to prepare him for a 200-kilometer speedskating tour.

Noordam is a supply planning excellence manager at Eastman’s Rotterdam site in the Netherlands. He helps business teams optimize short- and long-term supply planning so the company has the right amount of product inventory. His work maximizes efficiency for Eastman and satisfaction for its customers.

“I like working toward goals with small groups to make strategic changes fast,” Noordam said. “I see everything as a puzzle. Everything is connected. If there is an error in one place, I try to locate where it comes from. And, of course, you have to focus on your goals. It’s the same with preparing for this race. We have to focus and train in the months leading up to it so that we’re ready to compete.”

Noordam and a few friends committed to a yearly physical challenge a few years ago. Last year, they ran a marathon. Now they’re training for Elfstedentocht, a speedskating tour on natural ice set for late January in Austria. His strategic planning mindset is already at work in their training regimen.

Noordam works with Eastman supply managers to standardize supply planning capabilities across all businesses within the company, leveraging standard planning tools and processes. The approach ensures customers get the products they need when they need them without building excess inventory or unnecessary or inefficient production for Eastman.

“This type of work is easy when all the excitement is there in the beginning, but it becomes a lot harder when closing out the more complex topics,” said Rian van den Bos, Noordam’s manager at Eastman. “Tiemen has demonstrated an ability to work with that complexity. He does not give up easily and knows how to resolve issues using a practical approach. I'm convinced he will apply those skills to the ice-skating race as well.”

Ice skating is one of the most common winter activities in the Netherlands, so Noordam and his friends knew how to skate. But they needed training to complete Elfstedentocht without injury. As a strategic thinker at work and on the ice, Noordam knew they would need to build their stamina to prepare for the tour.

The team signed up for a 16-week training course to expand their basic skills and build their endurance. In addition to weekly training, the team members skate weekly on their own and cross-train through activities like cycling.

Noordam and his team are racing to raise funds for KiKa, a Dutch nonprofit organization committed to ending childhood cancers. So far, the team has raised 4,180 euros, exceeding their original goal of 1,000 euros.

“When we signed up for the tour, we noticed you could use your participation as a way to raise money for a nonprofit organization,” he said. “We later learned one of our neighbors has a 5-year-old daughter who needed surgery because of bone cancer, so skating for KiKa felt the right thing to do.”

Planning Is Everything — at Work and on the Ice

She was the first female General Supervisor at Wisconsin Vitreous Operations, first female Plant Manager at Wisconsin Cast Iron Operations and first female Associate Director of Quality and Continuous Improvement in Global Vitreous. She’s been promoted nine times in different operations roles across three continents and is currently serving as Director of the Kohler Operating System and Transformation Management Office.

The Manufacturing Institute has named Saranya a 2024 Women MAKE Awards Honoree. She is being recognized as part of prestigious peer-selected group of 100 women leaders and 30 rising female stars based on their contributions to their companies, communities and developing the next generation of talent. Winners were announced this month by the Manufacturing Institute, and Saranya will officially accept the honor at the 2024 Women MAKE Awards Gala in Washington D.C., on Thursday, April 18. “I am incredibly humbled by this honor, and I am proud to represent Kohler Company in accepting this award among the other honorees,” said Saranya, “This is a great step forward for women excelling in Manufacturing; and if this award inspires more women to enter and succeed in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Production careers at Kohler, that will be a true fulfillment.”

In 2023 alone, Saranya and the Global CI team implemented a lean program, training more than 1,500 associates from leadership to machine operators. Her team set critical standards for Kohler’s plants around the globe to achieve their priorities through a factory master plan. Saranya also led a refocus and rebranding of the Kohler Operation System, educating each plant on its importance and implementation. Through Saranya’s transformation role, her contributions to the Kitchen and Bath operations have helped streamline the entire organization with a focus on company performance and associates’ growth.

She is also the founder and past President of the Asian Resources of Kohler business resource group.

When it comes to her path to success, Saranya finds inspiration in the quote by Tim Notke — “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”

“I have never claimed to be the smartest in the room, but I have always been one of the hardest working. When challenges come your way, stay persistent, stay focused and never give up,” said Saranya. “Temporary failure is the best learning opportunity, and it could be a steppingstone to success. Feel the fear and do it anyway!”

Outside of work, Saranya continues her focus on excellence as a youth coach, mentor to the program coordinator and member of the board of review for the American Heritage Girls organization award recipients. A favorite activity with the girls has allowed Saranya to share her passion for ballroom dancing as she helped a room full of 5- to 18-year-olds earn their Dance Badge. A ballroom dancing competitor since college, Saranya continues to compete at the professional/amateur level and has placed first statewide and third nationally in International Ballroom at the United States Dance Championship. Saranya and her husband are active in their church and supporters of its mission work in Gabon, as well as several local charities.
