Schneider Electric Sustainability Impact Program Continues Progressing in Q1 2024

Boston Scientific released its <a href="https://www.bostonscientific.com/en-US/corporate-responsibility.html" target="_blank">2023 Performance Report</a> highlighting the company’s actions to improve patient outcomes while prioritizing environmental, social and governance (ESG) progress.

The report describes how teams across the company applied the science and transformation that define Boston Scientific’s business to advance its ESG priorities and goals, focused on advancing innovative care, empowering people and contributing to a healthier planet, while performing with integrity. 
Highlights of Boston Scientific’s 2023 ESG progress include:

<ul><li>Helping improve the lives of more than 37 million patients around the world with nearly 90 product launches and $1.4 billion invested in research and development.[1]</li>

Boston Scientific Reports 2023 Actions Toward a Healthier, More Equitable World

Achieving digital equity is at the heart of the work we do because we know how life-changing a reliable home Internet connection can be in today’s digital economy.

Through the federal government’s <a href="https://www.fcc.gov/acp" target="_blank">Affordable Connectivity Program</a> (ACP), more than 23 million households across America – <a href="https://www.bsgco.com/acp-fact-sheet" target="_blank">nearly 50% of which are military families</a> – are able to get online at little to no cost. Unfortunately, the ACP is only fully funded through April and is expected to lapse by May. This puts at risk all the progress we have made in keeping Americans connected to this critical resource.

<a href="https://corporate.comcast.com/stories/funding-affordable-connectivity-program-critical-for-our-countrys-future" target="_blank">As I said in January</a>, we believe that Congress and the White House should find a way to extend the ACP so people can stay connected and benefit from the Internet for education, healthcare, workforce development, veterans’ assistance, and so much more.

At Comcast, we remain committed to doing our part to help including:

Partial ACP Credit – To help ease the transition, all ACP customers will receive a federally funded ACP credit of $14 on their Xfinity bills ($35 on Tribal lands) for the month of May as the government program winds down.

Internet Essentials – We continue to offer <a href="https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/internet-essentials" target="_blank">Internet Essentials</a> – our reliable, low-cost high-speed Internet service – for $9.95/month. That is the exact same price it has been since 2011, when it was first introduced, despite inflation, while speeds have increased five times for no additional cost. Millions of Americans have been connected to Internet Essentials, which has become the largest and most comprehensive private-sector Internet adoption program in the country. All current ACP customers are eligible to switch to Internet Essentials tiers during this transition.

Internet Essentials+ – For customers looking for even faster speeds, Internet Essentials Plus offers double the speed – up to 100 Mbps – for $29.95/month.

Xfinity Mobile Savings – For those looking to save money on their monthly bills, we’re also offering discounts to customers who bundle their Internet service with <a href="https://www.xfinity.com/mobile/?CMP=KNC-43700053507087418-GOOGLE-694334329635-c-xfinity%20mobile-e-XM_Brand+Only_BR_Exact_North&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpcmetaOrhQMVkXNHAR2NmwxvEAAYASAAEgLYlvD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds" target="_blank">Xfinity Mobile</a>. New Internet Essentials Plus customers can take advantage of a free line of Xfinity Mobile for one year. Additionally, current customers enrolled in ACP with Comcast who add Xfinity Mobile can get an additional free unlimited line for one year, potentially saving them hundreds of dollars per year.

NOW WiFi Pass – For individuals and families on the go, Comcast has introduced <a href="https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/wifi?CMP=KNC-43700075421305697-GOOGLE-680335120269-c-buy%20wifi%20pass-p-Wifi_Pass_NB_Phrase_National&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0oXQta2phQMV3XJHAR3pVQusEAAYASAAEgLdwPD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds" target="_blank">NOW WiFi Pass</a>, which connects them to our 23 million+ Xfinity WiFi hotspots nationwide. Now through June 30, customers can get online for $10/month with no additional equipment required, no long-term commitments, or any cancellation fees.

Lift Zones – Individuals, whether they’re our customers or not, can access one of our more than 1,250 WiFi-connected <a href="https://corporate.comcast.com/impact/digital-equity/lift-zones" target="_blank">Lift Zones</a> across the country. Working with our extensive network of nonprofit partners, Lift Zones provide free Internet access in neighborhood locations like nonprofits, community centers, gyms, and parks and recreation facilities. Internet Essentials Partnership Program – Our <a href="https://corporate.comcast.com/impact/digital-equity/internet-essentials-partnership-program" target="_blank">Internet Essentials Partnerships Program</a> (IEPP) provides the opportunity for school districts and other organizations to fund and connect large numbers of students and families to broadband access at home. Festivals can generate massive amounts of waste, from attendees discarding single use-items like plastic cups and food containers, to emitting high levels of Co2 emissions from the generators powering each stage.

AEG’s Goldenvoice is challenging convention by pioneering sustainable practices in festival organizing and utilizing its three-day music festival in Long Beach, CA, Cali Vibes, as a blueprint for greening their own festival operations.

Now for the second consecutive year, Goldenvoice’s Cali Vibes, has partnered with Three Squares Inc., a Los Angeles-based environmental consulting firm, to develop a comprehensive sustainability program aimed at reducing emissions, minimizing waste, educating attendees and staff, and fostering eco-friendly practices throughout its operations.

<ul><li>Food Waste Reduction – All extra food at the festival was donated to local community shelters. Additionally, roughly 20% to 30% of the food vendors at Cali Vibes provided vegan menu options, with all vendors required to offer at least one vegetarian option.</li>
	<li>Reusable Cup Program: Through its partnership with r.World, the festival utilized r.Cup reusable cups and eliminated approximately 300,000 single-use plastic cups. Water was served in aluminum cans, and refill stations were located throughout the festival.</li>
	<li>Reducing Energy: To reduce on site energy consumption, Cali Vibes sourced Overdrive Energy Solutions’ battery power stations to capture solar energy to power light towers in parking lots, merch stations and bathroom zones. Energy efficient lighting systems relied on battery-powered LED lights. By sourcing locally-produced renewable diesel to power generators and heavy equipment, Cali Vibes eliminated 43 tons of carbon emissions at this year’s festival.</li>
	<li>Reducing Emissions: The festival promoted public transit use by offering attendees free or discounted public transit rides through a partnership with L.A. Metro. Festival organizers also implemented a “no idling” rule to reduce emissions by requiring cars and gas-powered golf carts to be turned off when not in motion.</li>
</ul>In addition to greening its festival operations, the team at Goldenvoice partnered with AEG's Social Impact department to nurture the next generation of environmental stewards by hosting an AEG Futures event at the festival. The career program brought together [50] underrepresented high school and college students to learn about sustainability-focused career opportunities available in live entertainment. The program offered students a chance to learn from industry experts about career opportunities, meet sustainability vendors who spoke to them about the specific Cali Vibes initiatives, participate in mentoring sessions, and explore the festival grounds, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainable practices in the live music space.

In a Transformative Year, Vertex Advances Its Commitment to Corporate Responsibility; Announces 2023 CR Report

Port operations are notoriously carbon-intensive; the transportation sector creates one-third of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, of which <a href="https://www.oecd.org/ocean/topics/ocean-shipping/#:~:text=The%20main%20transport%20mode%20for,comes%20with%20opportunities%20and%20challenges." target="_blank">shipping accounts for nearly 3%</a>. 

In an era where environmental sustainability is no longer optional but imperative, DP World is investing in decarbonizing its port operations and steer trade towards a more sustainable future.

On April 4, 2024, we unveiled the first charging station for electric trucks at our terminal on the South Dock of the Port of Callao in Peru. This initiative makes Callao the first port terminal in Latin America to feature this type of infrastructure, promoting decarbonization, environmental stewardship, and operational efficiency.

Electrification at the Forefront

Our latest venture in Callao is another step forward in DP World’s efforts to become carbon neutral by 2040 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The station, which is powered by 100% renewable energy, features 10 fast chargers of 200 KW each, and will be used to charge our fleet of 20 electric ITVs (internal transport trucks). This setup not only supports our fleet but also propels the port towards carbon neutrality.

The charging station, equipped with a 2-megawatt substation and dual-vehicle CCS2-type connectors, also incorporates a smart charge management platform that monitors energy consumption and CO2 emissions savings. Supplementing this, 60 KW of rooftop solar power is used to power the station, further reducing our grid energy dependency.

A Sustainable Milestone

The introduction of this electric charging station is projected to reduce DP World's carbon emissions significantly, preventing the release of 2,145 metric tons of CO2 equivalents annually at the Port of Callao. Given Peru's standing as 38th globally for air pollution (according to the 2022 World Air Quality Report), this reduction is not just a corporate achievement but a national benefit, highlighting our commitment to enhancing air quality and reducing environmental impacts.

Broadening the Impact

DP World's commitment extends beyond Callao. In our continuous pursuit of innovation, last year we also <a href="https://www.csrwire.com/press_releases/788796-dp-world-bolsters-green-initiatives-perus-port-callao-15-electric-cranes" target="_blank">integrated 15 new electric cranes</a> into our operations at the port. DP World has also been making other investments in sustainability at the Port of Callao.

Earth Month 2024 is a special one. It not only reminds us of our shared responsibility to help protect the planet but also marks the two-year anniversary of our Sustainable Home Improvement Program (SHIP), which has become one of our most successful and beloved sustainability initiatives.

We launched SHIP on Earth Day 2022, to help Gen team members bring sustainability into their daily lives. The <a href="https://www.gendigital.com/blog/impact/environment/seal-sustainability-awards-2023" target="_blank">award-winning</a> program offers individual grants of up to $500 per year for home projects that benefit the environment, and the response from Gen team members has been extraordinary. To date, more than 1,800 SHIP projects, both big and small, have been funded, from upgrading home appliances to more energy-efficient models to planting trees and backyard gardens.
<img alt="Solar panels on a rooftop." data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="5b42562d-515e-47e3-919d-a35da1d2ec00" src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/solarpanel_gen_042424.jpg" width="640" class="align-center" height="807" loading="lazy" />“I recently moved into a new house and needed to upgrade it to make it more heat efficient,” said Lisa Traynor, who works on the Global Supply Chain Team and is based in Dublin. “Although beautiful and green, Ireland can also be wet and damp! I used the SHIP grant towards attic spray foam insulation which reduced my energy use and my energy costs, making my home much more efficient in terms of heat retention. The SHIP grant was easy to access and easy to use.”

Gen team members interested in using the benefit submit an application that describes how they will use the funds. The Gen Environment team reviews each one then reimburses the applicant once they have completed the project.

“I chose to plant trees in my backyard,” said Alan Zhang, a Senior Network Security Engineer based in Ontario, Canada. “I believe it is a positive and meaningful way to celebrate and make a difference in the world. The trees can improve local air quality, provide habitat for wildlife and reduce erosion. I believe this program is a good approach to build a better world for future generations.”

Katharina Polainer, a Sales &amp; Marketing Specialist who lives in Tettnang, Germany, used SHIP to purchase solar panels and an accompanying battery for her home. Efforts like these also help us lower our overall Scope 3 emissions—GHG emissions from upstream and downstream activities.

“With PV panels, we can produce environmentally friendly power for our own house and the community in peak seasons,” Katharina explained. “I highly appreciate the incentive as PV panel prices and battery prices are still at a pretty high level, so anything that helps us financially is a huge plus.”

The SHIP initiative is one of many initiatives that helped empower employees to choose sustainability this Earth Month. The TERRA employee resource group, open to all team members who are interested in environmental topics, hosts events year-round to raise awareness of sustainability, biodiversity, green energy and more. Over the past several months, TERRA has hosted webinars on the impacts of climate change on the weather, major takeaways from the United Nations COP28 climate conference and tips on going green during the holiday season. The group has grown to more than 70 members globally.

Celebrating Earth Month With Team Gen

Chief Financial Officer David Turner, a former NCAA athlete at the University of Alabama, is well known at Regions for his competitive spirit.

“I’m proud of our bronze award. But a silver would be even better!”

He’s not talking about the 2024 summer games.

Regions was recently presented a bronze U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award for the 2022-2023 school year. This was the third year in a row the bank was recognized for providing more than 1,500 volunteer hours to Junior Achievement.

Great news, but the bank was very close to earning the next level award. The actual number of volunteer hours served by Regions associates was 4,099 – just 901 hours shy of the 5,000 needed for the coveted silver award.

Along with his passion for competition, Turner also has great enthusiasm for community service – especially when it comes to financial education for young people.

“It’s so important that we educate our youth and provide mentorship to help them go to college, succeed in the workforce or start a business,” Turner said. “Learning early in life to make good financial decisions benefits not only the individual student, but their families, communities and local economies.”

Turner is a strong advocate for Junior Achievement (JA), an organization that he’s been part of for 24 years as a board member of <a href="https://alabama.ja.org/" id="modal-toggler--2056744408-3" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Junior Achievement of Alabama</a> and former board chair.

“Kids who participate in JA are more likely to have a college degree, feel confident about managing money, have career success and have started a business as an adult. There are many ways to be successful and there’s no reason why every child shouldn’t have an opportunity to succeed,” Turner said.

The lessons are delivered to students across the country through local school systems and volunteers from the community.

“What sets JA apart is that it’s an experiential learning organization,” said Chip Reed, president of Junior Achievement of Alabama. “We bridge the classroom with the real world and allow young people to interact with businesspeople.

“You can’t expect kids to become what they cannot see. But when they are learning from real professionals from real companies from their own communities, they can begin to see themselves in those roles and visualize their own success.”

JA’s numbers are impressive. More than 150,000 volunteers reached almost 4.5 million students nationally in the 2022-2023 school year, in more than 175,000 classrooms in 18,000 schools.

David Turner isn’t the only Regions leader who understands the importance of investing in our youth through volunteerism. Earnest Wilks, Commercial Banking leader and market executive for Sarasota, Bradenton, Ft. Myers, Cape Coral and surrounding areas, serves on the board of <a href="https://southwestflorida.ja.org/" id="modal-toggler-1799890321-4" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Junior Achievement Southwest Florida</a>.

“Junior Achievement allows Regions associates to bring banking skillsets to the community by teaching financial literacy while also sharing with students the broad areas of our industry,” Wilks said. “In my conversations with southwest Florida business owners, a common concern is the local workforce and the future of it. Junior Achievement provides an opportunity for students to learn about career options in our area and prepare students for success later in life.”

According to Wilks, Regions associates in the southwest Florida market have also rallied behind this effort. As part of <a href="https://doingmoretoday.com/taking-bolder-next-steps-how-regions-is-helping-people-build-financial-confidence/" target="_blank">Financial Literacy Month</a> and the bank’s <a href="https://doingmoretoday.com/regions-bank-teams-celebrate-financial-literacy-month-by-sharing-the-good/" target="_blank">Share the Good</a>® program, more than 20 associates participated in the <a href="https://southwestflorida.ja.org/events/2024-ja-inspire" id="modal-toggler-379947217-5" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">JA Inspire</a> career expo on April 10.

According to Reed, JA board service is not just governance, it’s also access and credibility.

“Board members help run the organization, but perhaps more importantly they help open doors in the community,” he said. “They help tell our story and broaden our reach.”

<a href="https://doingmoretoday.com/a-day-in-the-life/" target="_blank">Chance Tharp, a relationship manager for Regions Commercial Banking group in Little Rock, Arkansas</a>, is another good example of a JA board member who is also a strong advocate. He serves on the board of directors for <a href="https://arkansas.ja.org/about/ja-central" id="modal-toggler--472895926-6" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Junior Achievement of Central Arkansas</a> and provides a considerable amount of hands-on volunteer time to the organization.

Tharp said it all started 14 years ago when he began working for Regions and recognized a need in the community for early financial instruction and access to tools and resources.

“I didn’t have financial education growing up, but my parents taught me important lessons about making decisions about money from a young age,” Tharp said. “But not every child has the opportunity to learn that at home. JA fills that gap, and it’s fun to step into the classroom and teach kids. I’m really a teacher and coach at heart.”

Each fall and spring, he works with the <a href="https://thenhsba.com/" id="modal-toggler-1412576994-7" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">National High School Basketball Association</a> to teach a JA course to participating students.

“This after-school program is geared toward kids in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods who want to play sports but are not part of a high school team,” Tharp explained. “The basketball coaching helps them build game skills, instills discipline and teaches them about being part of a team. The JA curriculum provides a different kind of life lesson – about money basics and what it takes to be financially successful.”

According to Reed, this kind of direct interaction with students is what makes JA work.

“JA is only successful when communities engage. Volunteerism is germane to the very design of the organization,” he said.

As Reed explained, JA volunteers are real-world role models for K-12 students and are critical to fulfilling the organization’s mission.

Sommer Uzelec, a senior manager in Accounting at Regions’ EnerBank division, is an enthusiastic supporter of <a href="https://ja-utah.org/" id="modal-toggler--2072474741-8" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Junior Achievement of Utah and Idaho</a>.

“We all have potential and sometimes just need that one person to mentor you or show you how you can reach that potential,” Uzelec said. “When I teach elementary school kids about money, credit scores and how higher education can help them obtain their goals, I love to see the light bulb turn on when they realize they can do it.”

Uzelec acknowledged that the financial education lessons can go both ways. “When teaching a group of kindergartners last year about the difference between needs and wants, I had one little girl give a pretty persuasive argument about why her teddy bear was a need.”

“Seeing how they enjoyed it and watching them talk about what they learned was a meaningful experience,” Alvarado said. “I decided I wanted to help other kids experience that. I really appreciate being able to give every child the opportunity to realize their potential through practical skills.”

When it comes to volunteerism, <a href="https://doingmoretoday.com/regions-honors-yolanda-hollingsworth-with-may-better-life-award/" target="_blank">Yolanda Hollingsworth Regions Community Relations Officer for Middle and East Tennessee</a>, works many hours every year <a href="https://doingmoretoday.com/a-giving-heart/" target="_blank">serving several nonprofit organizations</a>. And <a href="https://nashville.ja.org/" id="modal-toggler--352146422-9" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee</a> is special part of her volunteer efforts.

Hollingsworth was recently recognized by JA in their Volunteer Spotlight. In her 16 years of classroom instruction, she has delivered all types of JA programs to students ranging in age from kindergarten through high school. Besides her own service, Hollingsworth was also honored for her ability to inspire and motivate associates from more than 50 Tennessee branches to volunteer with JA.

In fact, during the 2022-2023 school year associates from the Middle Tennessee market volunteered 243 hours for JA and they’re on pace to meet that number for 2023-2024.

“Yolanda is great in the classroom,” according to a local teacher. “Every Friday the students would ask if ‘Ms. Yo’ was coming. They were so excited to learn from her and loved all the activities she did with them.”

The feeling is mutual.

“It is so valuable in showing high school students about budgeting and all the bills they will have once they are adults that they never think about,” she explained. “When you see the students’ eyes brighten, you can’t help but feel good about what you are doing as a volunteer.

“Or when you hear a student say, ‘I am going home and thank my momma’, it makes you smile and know that just maybe you made a difference in their life.”

In-classroom instruction is important, but there are other ways to volunteer, including job shadowing, career speaker opportunities and programs such <a href="https://jausa.ja.org/programs/opportunity/ja-finance-park-and-ja-biztown-capstone" id="modal-toggler--1674167268-11" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">JA Biztown</a>.

“If you believe in the JA mission, there’s a way to help,” Reed said. He encourages anyone who’s interested but may be slightly intimidated about teaching to assist an experienced instructor first, or perhaps partner with a colleague or friend. And the broad age range of students – from kindergarten through seniors in high school – provides an opportunity to find the right group you can best relate to.

When many people think of Junior Achievement, they recall participating in or supporting the bowling tournaments that take place across the country. The annual Birmingham event in March was another huge success. Thanks to leadership from co-chairs Turner Benoist and Pritha Powell, Regions associates raised more than $112,000 for Junior Achievement of Alabama.

Regions Consumer Bank Regional Executive Steve Nivet was the top fundraiser for the Birmingham event, and he has a long history with JA. He served on the board of <a href="https://miami.ja.org/" id="modal-toggler-235918618-12" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Junior Achievement of Greater Miami</a> for three years when he lived in south Florida and was honored as a top fundraiser for that chapter.

Reed expressed appreciation for the various ways that Regions supports JA, saying, “Regions is one of the best friends of JA. Not just in Birmingham, but throughout the country. I’m so pleased we can work together to help kids be successful in life.
