This course will focus on solid waste reduction, reuse, and recycling as a strategy for increasing the environmental sustainability of a business. Topics will include:
* why solid waste matters to sustainability;
* how to conduct an assessment of your business waste stream;
* practical and emerging strategies for reducing and diverting waste from landfill
* how to use community-based social marketing to support behavior change.
Instructor: Shanna Eller is the Director of Community Environmental Services (CES) at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. CES has provided high quality research, technical assistance, data collection, and educational outreach services in the areas of solid waste management, recycling, and waste prevention since the late 1980's. Shanna brings to her position at CES applied experience in multiple aspects of community-based physical, social, and economic development. Shanna holds a Masters degree in Urban Planning and a PhD in Urban Studies with a focus on environmental sustainability.
