Maryland-Asia Environmental Partnership (MD-AEP) is pleased to announce a special event at the National Press Club in Washington featuring Dr. Rita Colwell as our guest of honor, this year's winner of the Stockholm Water Prize.
MD-AEP and all of our many business, government and academic stakeholders wish to recognize her for receiving this great global recognition for her leadership in water borne disease prevention. Dr. Colwell is one of Maryland and America's great treasures and a global leader regarding the discoveries of waterborne diseases and the intersections of climate change, water and public health. Dr. Colwell was among the first to link the spread of diseases, including cholera, to climate change, she also led experiments on the impact of El Niño on human health and aquatic environmental stability in the United States. "As a result of her work, scientists are now able to link changes in the natural environment to the spread of disease."
We are very pleased to announced that Dr. Ralph J. Cicerone, President of the National Academy of Sciences will be joining us to provide opening remarks and introduce our honored guest, Dr. Rita Colwell. We will also have a special presentation of MD-AEP's Leadership Recognition Award, followed by an interactive roundtable panel of business, government and scientific leaders who will discuss the links between climate change, water and sanitation and public health including Dr. Colwell; Dr. Le Jiang, Chief Scientist of I.M. Systems Group; Shari Wilson, Secretary, Maryland Department of Environment; Albert Goodman, Principal, Camp, Dresser & McKee/Past President Water Environment Federation; Dr. Anwar Huq, Professor at the Maryland Pathogen Institute and Matt Gardner, Senior Vice President, MS&L/Past President, BayBio.
