Carroll Bogert of Human Rights Watch - Corporate Best Practices in Supporting Human Rights
Corporate Best Practices in Supporting Human Rights - with Carroll
Bogert of Human Rights Watch
In the last decade, there has been a dramatic shift in corporate attitudes
toward social responsibility.
According to a survey of Fortune 500 companies, past scandals linking
global companies with human rights abuses have triggered a rush by
businesses to find ways to avoid being sucked into similar crises.
Progressive companies today recognize that exemplary performance, in terms
of human rights, tends to be preferred by ethical investment funds and a
growing number of customers.
Compliance on human rights issues, however, can sometimes be difficult.
Companies genuinely, and with the best intentions, struggle with how they
can incorporate human rights principles into their practice around the
world. Carroll Bogert will analyze current expectations on
corporate behavior and will discuss the tools available to help companies
comply with the best human rights standards.
Carroll Bogert is the associate director of Human Rights
Watch, overseeing the organization's external relations and working
alongside the executive director. Bogert has an extensive background as an
international reporter and continues to write op-ed pieces for the New York
Times, the Washington Post, the Financial Times, USA Today, the Boston
Globe, and the New Republic. She has held numerous positions for Newsweek,
including serving as an international correspondent, acting foreign editor
in New York, bureau chief of the Moscow office, and a reporter in the
Beijing and Hong Kong outlets. Bogert is fluent in Mandarin Chinese as
well as Russian, and holds an M.A. in East Asian Studies and a B.A. magna
cum laude from Harvard University.
