Corporate philanthropy initiatives are implemented in two ways: manually or letting automation take over. Some businesses are doing everything manually. This includes keeping spreadsheets of employee volunteer hours logged, receiving hundreds of emails about different volunteering requests and everything else under the sun that comes along with corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Corporate social responsibility continues to grow into something where companies aren’t only philanthropic with their money and time. CSR has become part of the business model, and, for some, the entire business model. This can be seen in Dr. Priscilla Chan’s and Mark Zuckerberg’s formation of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative which aims to give back their fortune to benefit the world for their daughter, but in the form of an LLC.

At New York Life we are implementing a new partner to handle our volunteering, giving campaign (or as I like to think of it now, marketing campaign for giving), and matching gifts programs. The process takes my breath away. I am in complete awe of how many details there are that must be gotten right. And I realize that I have very unrealistic expectations. Here’s why.

Many companies today yearn for more than the traditional charitable donations throughout the year, instead, they want to actively engage their employees in the community. They also want to engage their employees in volunteering that matches their skills. These are all good trends, and it makes business sense too.

For all the good-natured and well-meaning conversations about sustainable travel, there is often a fundamental problem. Sustainable travel conversations happen at conventions, think-tanks and events in exclusive locations, command high-fees, and are just plain hard to get to. That means that the people most affected by (the lack of) sustainable tourism, aren’t at the table. Sure, there are NGOs and groups that represent them. But is that truly enough?
