The world is changing rapidly and new demands face business leaders to deal with the planet and environment more sustainably, to deal with the numerous societies their organisations operate in more equitably and with greater cultural understanding, and to be more open, transparent and responsible with respect to their stakeholders. Recent events such as the credit and banking crisis alongside a seemingly regular stream of corporate scandals have led to renewed debate as to the legitimate nature and purpose of business in society. However It is also important to recognise that business represents the predominant productive resource of the economy providing financial and human resources, infrastructure, innovation and technology: thus sustainable development cannot be achieved without the support of business.

As sustainability professionals, we're always telling people why doing good is good for business. But sometimes we forget that the same logic applies in our own lives too: doing good is good for our careers. Through mentoring others we can enhance our own job satisfaction and invigorate our sense of impact, we can advance our own personal development by honing our listening and interpersonal skills, and we can benefit the organisations we work for by opening to new insights and ideas from younger or fresher minds.

In March, The New York Times ran a column declaring that "Fewer Women Run Big Companies Than Men named John." The article cited a Glass Ceiling Index that showed that Jims, Bobs, Jacks and Bills combined outnumber the total number of women among chief executives of S&P 1500 firms. A woeful sign that women still lag in leadership roles in corporate America. But go deeper down the corporate ladder and the story is even worse.
