Susan Arnot Heaney is an independent consultant in the areas of corporate responsibility, public affairs, cause marketing, philanthropy and communications, with a focus on helping organizations truly do well by doing good. She believes in the power of business to transform the world and the vital role of public-private partnerships and multi-stakeholder approaches to address global issues.
Heaney spent nearly 16 years with Avon Products, Inc. and the Avon Foundation. In her final role as Executive Director, Corporate Responsibility, Heaney was tapped to develop Avon’s corporate responsibility practice, including strategic policies, communications, reporting, stakeholder engagement, mobilization and fundraising. She is especially proud to have created and led Hello Green Tomorrow (HGT), Avon’s first environmental mobilization and cause marketing program, which launched in 50 countries and partnered with World Wildlife Fund and The Nature Conservancy on the issue of deforestation. HGT received a Ladies Home Journal Do Good Award and a Halo Award for Cause Marketing.
At the Avon Foundation, her roles included Director of the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade and Director of Communications, focused on women’s health and empowerment.
Heaney is a skillful communicator of complex issues, including reporting to stakeholders and rating organizations that helped Avon secure placement on the Best 100 Corporate Citizens, Corporate Social Responsibility Index Top 50, Best Global Brands, Carbon Disclosure Project and Newsweek Green Ranking. She created the Avon Corporate Responsibility Report and the Avon’s Calling Blog, which was recognized by MIN Editorial & Design Awards and was named by the Chamber of Commerce's Business Civic Leadership Center as one of the “top three [corporate] blogs that move the needle on issues.”
She is committed to spreading the message of sustainability, corporate responsibility and women’s empowerment through frequent speaking engagements, writing and social media (including @SusanHeaney tweets).
Prior to Avon she was Director of Public Relations & Corporate Communications for Elizabeth Arden and served on the Communications Council of then-parent company Unilever. Early in her career, Heaney worked on the business side of publishing.
She serves on the board and council of several non-profits, including the Business Council for Peace (Bpeace), with whom she traveled to El Salvador in 2013 to work with entrepreneurs.
In her personal life, Heaney is a volunteer gardener for the New York City Parks Department and active in environmental and community affairs in both New York City and Greenport, Long Island. Committed to a low carbon footprint, Heaney and her husband are proud owners of several bicycles but have never owned a car.
