Get the Power! NYC Green Map Launch Feb 15
Take Charge New Yorkers! The world's 225th Green Map focuses on energy impacts, conservation and renewables citywide
(CSRwire) The all new Powerful Green Map of New York will make its debut on
February 15, 2006. Focusing on energy conservation, renewables and climate
change, this map has great potential to mark a turning point in our city's
energy future.
"Taking action to make smart energy choices will help us make the move
towards a more secure and empowered future, in addition to having a
positive impact on our environment and our wallets. We expect the new
Powerful Green Map to improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers,"
says Wendy E. Brawer, Founding Director of Green Map System, the global
eco-cultural mapping organization behind this community media project. Use
the Powerful Green Map - online or in print - to lower your utility bills,
find a new cycling route, see cutting edge green buildings, plan a
riverside solar tour with the kids, to track down fresh local vegetables
for dinner and much more.
The Powerful Green Map is the fifth citywide edition of the Green Apple
Map of NYC's environment since 1992, and the first to focus on a single
critically important theme - energy. It provides an exciting overview and
habit-changing resources for everyone. With its three views of NYC's
energy environment - the Everyday and Easy, the Powerful Investments and
the Downsides of our "fuelish" choices, this map charts hundreds of sites
around NYC and links users to 200 online resources. Printed on 100%
post-consumer recycled paper, it's available in both folded and poster
formats. The project's website, GreenAppleMap.org, features a new digital
edition of the Powerful Green Map, plus resources in English, Spanish and
Chinese.
Get free copies of the new Powerful Green Map for your friends, neighbors
or class at the launch on the 15th. Afterwards, get yours at Greenmarkets
around town, or check online at GreenAppleMap.org for more pick up points.
For one copy by mail, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Green Map,
PO Box 249, NYC 10002-0249. For several, call Green Map at 212 674 1631 or
email apple@greenmap.org.
100,000 handy pocket-sized free folding Powerful Green Maps and poster
editions ($5) are available, thanks to support from New York City
Environmental Fund, the Greenacre Foundation, the Durst Organization,
Community Energy, altPOWER, Inc., Race Age Inc., NRDC, Angelica Kitchen,
Chris Benedict RA and many other proponents of a clean, safe and secure
energy future.
Event details:
All are invited to the Powerful Green Map launch event, being held on the
campus of The New School:
Theresa Lang Student Center
55 West 13th Street in Manhattan
Wednesday, February 15 from 6 to 8 pm
The event is co-hosted by Green Map System and The New School Tishman
Environment and and Design Center. Speakers at the launch event include
environmental, visualization and mapping experts Wendy Brawer, Joel
Towers, William Bevington, Carter Craft, Christine Datz-Romero and Jean
Gardner. It's a great opportunity to learn more about citywide energy
options, and to hear about the global Green Map network, which has spread
to 46 countries in the decade since the concept originated in NYC. As seen
at GreenMap.org, each locally-created Green Map charts a unique landscape
of sustainability and cultural resources, all using Green Map's globally
designed Icons. The Powerful Green Map is the 225th Green Map published
worldwide.
The launch's co-host, The New School Tishman Environment and Design
Center, was established in January 2006. It is a major design-led
initiative in the field of environmental studies that will build a
curriculum in environmental and allied sciences and support
cross-disciplinary, long-term research projects at the university. Thanks
also to Parsons The New School for Design, Eugene Lang College The New
School for Liberal Arts and Milano The New School for Management and Urban
Policy for hosting this free event, and to Ben & Jerry's Homemade, Angelica
Kitchen and Locust Grove for refreshments.
