Sterling Planet Selected to Fulfill US Environmental Protection Agency’s Commitment to 100% Renewable Energy
Sterling Planet to supply 135 million renewable energy kilowatt hours
(CSRwire) ATLANTA, GA - October 19, 2007 - Sterling Planet has signed an agreement
with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to extend the agency's
commitment to purchase renewable energy equivalent to 100 percent of its
annual electricity needs at more than 190 EPA facilities nationwide.
Sterling Planet will provide 135 million kilowatt hours from renewable
energy sources to EPA over the next year.
Last year, EPA became the first federal agency to make the switch to 100%
renewable energy with its total commitment to nearly 330 million kWh per
year. That's enough electricity to power 30,000 homes for a year.
"At EPA, we don't just talk the talk, we walk the walk," said EPA
Administrator Stephen L. Johnson when the agency announced its 100%
greenup. "For 35 years, EPA has been greening our nation's landscape. By
committing to alternative, renewable power sources, the agency is meeting
the president's call to green our nation's energy."
RECs help reduce emissions associated with conventional electricity
sources. On an annual basis, EPA's total green power purchases offset
about 460 million pounds of carbon dioxide - roughly the amount 41,000
cars emit during a year.
"Sterling Planet is honored to be the supplier of choice for the
standard-bearer of the environmental movement our nation is now
experiencing," said Mel Jones, Sterling Planet President and CEO. "The
EPA is a credible leader, providing a mechanism to promote conversion to
renewable energy through Climate Leaders and the Green Power Partnership
and also setting a positive example for others to follow."
As a buyer of 100 percent renewable energy, EPA continues to be an active
partner in the agency's own Green Power Partnership, a voluntary
public-private program that promotes renewable energy. EPA ranks as No. 7
on the list of largest U.S. renewable energy purchasers, second only to the
US Air Force among government buyers.
