AMERIGROUP to Participate in National Disability Mentoring Day
Company Will Host Students from Local Public Schools for Career Development
(CSRwire) VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Oct. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AMERIGROUP
Corporation (NYSE: AGP) will host more than 50 high school students this
week at its National Support Center in Virginia Beach as part of the
Company's participation in National Disability Mentoring Day. The effort,
presented nationally by the American Association of People with
Disabilities (AAPD) and locally by the Norfolk (Virginia) Public School
System, involves pairing teenage students with disabilities with
AMERIGROUP employees in the students' chosen areas of career interest.
"This event is a great opportunity for us to open our doors to a
generation that is excited to learn about what our individual employees
contribute and accomplish on a daily basis for our members," said James G.
Carlson, AMERIGROUP President and Chief Executive Officer. "What's more,
it's an opportunity to show that the abilities and skills that we each
possess can be put to use in a variety of ways for a company such as
AMERIGROUP, which partners with federal and state governments to serve the
public -- specifically by ensuring that the best care possible is available
for the financially vulnerable, seniors and people with disabilities."
National Disability Mentoring Day is Wednesday, October 17 and
represents a partnership between the AAPD and the U.S. Department of
Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy, as well as numerous
corporations nationwide. The program began at the White House in 1999 to
promote career development for students and job-seekers with disabilities
through job-shadowing and hands-on career exploration.
In participating in National Disability Day, AMERIGROUP is hosting
more than 50 students with disabilities from Norfolk Public Schools to the
Company's headquarters in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on both October 16 and
October 17. In addition to spending time with an AMERIGROUP associate in
the student's requested area of interest, these high school students will
learn more about potential career paths, dressing for success and job
interview skills. AMERIGROUP also is hosting similar Disability Mentoring
Day events at its offices in Ohio and throughout Florida.
AMERIGROUP was founded in 1994 and initially focused solely on serving
low-income mothers and children through the Medicaid program. In 1998, the
Company began serving people with chronic and severe health conditions
through Medicaid's Aged, Blind and Disabled (ABD) program. AMERIGROUP is
now a national leader in private sector ABD programs, serving about
171,000 ABD enrollees nationwide, and drawing from the consultation of its
own National Advisory Board, formed earlier this year. The Board,
comprised of a wide range of distinguished community advocates and
healthcare experts, is meeting this week in Houston with Company
executives to continue AMERIGROUP's efforts to remain on the cutting edge
in addressing the needs of this population.
