Ashoka Names Hernando de Soto, President and Founder of the Institute for Liberty and Democracy, to its Global Academy

(CSRwire) September 27, 2007 - Ashoka, a global organization supporting the field of
social entrepreneurship, announced today that Hernando de Soto has been
named to Ashoka's Global Academy. De Soto, Founder and President of the
Institute for Liberty and Democracy (ILD), an internationally-respected
think tank focused on property rights for the poor, will join Nobel Peace
Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and eight other leading global social
entrepreneurs as a member of this highly selective group.
Hernando de Soto pioneered the idea of bringing people out of poverty by
turning "dead capital", informally held assets, into "live capital"
through the formalization of property rights. An expert in the
extra-legal sector, de Soto has demonstrated how legal protection of
assets can bring economic opportunity to the poor. Since its inception,
the ILD has advised governments worldwide on legal and policy reforms
needed to simplify property and business registration processes; it has
also enabled poor people to become part of the market system. Former
President Bill Clinton calls the ILD, "the most promising anti-poverty
initiative in the world."
"De Soto exemplifies the best qualities of a social entrepreneur," said
Bill Drayton, Founder and Chairman of Ashoka. "He has brought an
unprecedented degree of attention and funding to the vital issue of
squatters and informal economies and helped lift millions of people out of
poverty by providing them with collateral and access to capital."

Global Academy Member, founder and Chair of BRAC, the largest citizen
sector organization in the world, and member of the U.N. Commission on
Legal Empowerment for the Poor which De Soto chairs.
As a member of the Global Academy, De Soto will share his expertise and
insights and serve as a global leader for the field of social
entrepreneurship.

De Soto is the tenth member of the Global Academy, joining Muhammad Yunus,

of Transparency International; Oded Grajew, Founder of the World Social
Forum; Bill Drayton, Founder of Ashoka; Ela Bhatt, Founder of the
Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA); Alice Tepper Marlin, Founder of
the Council on Economic Priorities; and Ron Grzywinski and Mary Houghton,
Co-Founders of Shorebank.

incorporación de Hernando de Soto como miembro de la Academia de
Emprendedores Sociales. De Soto, fundador y presidente del Instituto
Libertad y Democracias (ILD), un reconocido 'think tank' que centra su
investigación en la promoción de los derechos de propiedad de los
pobres, se une al ganador del premio Nobel, Muhammad Yunus y otros ocho
emprendedores sociales de reconocida trayectoria como miembro de este
selecto grupo.
Hernando de Soto ha introducido y abandera la idea de rescatar a las
personas de la pobreza mediante la conversión del "capital muerto"
contenido en los bienes que poseen en "capital vivo" formalizando sus
derechos de propiedad. De Soto es un experto en el sector extralegal que
ha demostrado cómo la protección legal de los bienes puede darles una
oportunidad económica única a los pobres. Desde sus inicios, el ILD ha
brindado asesoría a gobiernos alrededor del mundo sobre las reformas
legales y políticas necesarias para simplificar sus procesos de registro
de la propiedad inmueble y empresarial; permitiendo a los pobres además
incorporarse al sistema de mercado. El Presidente Bill Clinton considera
