EPA Places Mohawk on Two Top Green Power Lists
(CSRwire) COHOES, NY - August 29, 2007 - Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. is now on two of
the Environmental Protection Agency's lists of most sustainable companies.
Mohawk is #22 on the EPA's National Top 25 list of Green Power Partners,
and is now on the list of 100% Green Power Purchasers.
National Top 25 List of Green Power Partners is an EPA list
comprised of companies that voluntarily purchase green power as a way to
reduce their environmental impact while promoting the development and use
of renewable energy resources. In addition to Mohawk, companies included
on this list are Wells Fargo & Company, U.S. Air Force, and Starbucks.
100% Green Power Partners list includes all the EPA Partner
organizations that are purchasing 100% green power for their U.S.
operations. The combined purchases of the companies on this list amounts
to more than 3 billion kWh annually. Mohawk is proud to take its place on
this list with other environmentally conscious companies including Aspen
Skiing Company, Origins, and Whole Foods Market.
Mohawk became a Green Power Partner in 2003, with its initial move to use
wind-generated electricity for manufacturing its papers. This year, the
company increased its windpower purchase and now offsets 100% of the
annual electric power consumption with the purchase of 100 million kWh
(kilowatt hours) of renewable energy certificates (RECs).
"America is shifting to a 'green culture,' with more and more businesses
understanding that environmental responsibility is everyone's
responsibility," said Marcus Peacock, EPA's Deputy Administrator. "EPA
commends Mohawk Fine Papers for making a long-term commitment to
protecting the environment."
For over a decade, Mohawk has been a leader in the support of
emission-free, renewable energy. In addition to voluntarily capping
emissions and making significant investments to reduce energy and
emissions, Mohawk has set an industry benchmark as the first U.S. mill to
make premium papers carbon neutral. Mohawk now manufactures all of its
papers with windpower, and its current carbon neutral portfolio includes
the entire Strathmore Writing, Strathmore Script, Beckett Concept and
Beckett Expression paper lines.
