Grants Awarded to Health Organization Serving Hurricane-Affected Communities
Total grants from The Baxter International Foundation Health Recovery Fund reach more than $1.1 million
(CSRwire) JACKSON, MS - July 11, 2007 – The Foundation for the Mid South (FMS)
announced today the recipients of grants totaling $98,687 on behalf of The
Baxter International Foundation Health Recovery Fund. More than $1.1
million in grants have been awarded since the fund’s inception in
February 2006 to support the recovery and restoration efforts of
community-based health care clinics, nonprofits, and other community-based
health services in the Mid South after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
As recovery from the hurricanes continues, the challenge is to improve and
transform the health status of our region. To aid in the transformation,
the Fund has awarded grants to entities that support innovative ideas,
approaches, and/or plans to help decrease the health inequities of the
vulnerable and socially disadvantaged residents in the Mid South. FMS
received funding for The Baxter International Foundation Health Recovery
Fund from The Baxter International Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation.
The organizations receiving grants in the third round of funding are:
Family and Youth Counseling Agency — www.fyca.org ($50,000) to support the
Better Health Care Initiative, a network approach to share tools,
knowledge, and information among health service providers serving Lake
Charles.
Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education Center — www.swlahec.com
($48,687) to provide operational support for its health and health
education work and hurricane recovery efforts in the areas impacted by
Hurricane Rita.
The focus during this third round of funding was on nonprofit
organizations in southwest Louisiana that were directly affected by
Hurricane Rita. "In each of the three rounds of grants from this fund, we
sought to expand the impact of community-based health care providers on the
health status of Mid South residents. These two organizations meet that
standard," said Necole S. Irvin, program officer, Foundation for the Mid
South. "They continue to work in the recovery of southwest Louisiana and
its citizens, and we are excited to support them."
These grants bring the total of grant dollars provided through The Baxter
International Foundation Health Recovery Fund to $1,182,500. The first
two rounds of health recovery grants—totaling $1,083,813—were
previously awarded to 18 health service organizations throughout
Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas. The funds helped healthcare
professionals to re-establish their health clinics, supply and operate
mobile medical units, provide health services to communities and families
in need after the hurricanes, and support innovative ideas in the
community.
"The collaboration with FMS has allowed us to assist with hurricane
disaster relief directly, due to FMS’ expertise in serving local
communities," said Celene Peurye, executive director, The Baxter
International Foundation. "This partnership furthers our objective to
increase access to healthcare and make a difference in the lives of people
in need."
