Staples Releases 2006 Soul Report Detailing its Corporate Responsibility Efforts

Staples Soul reflects Staples' commitment to corporate responsibility, embodying what it means to embrace diversity, sustain the environment, give back to communities and practice sound ethics.

Key accomplishments Staples achieved in 2006 include:

Ethics

  • Rolling out a new Speak Up program to foster open, honest communication and encourage sound decision making.

  • Launching new tools, such as customized online training, to provide practical information to help associates make ethical decisions.

  • Completing the transition to more comprehensive social responsibility audits for factories manufacturing Staples® brand products.

    Environment

  • Doubling the purchase of clean renewable energy to 20 percent of U.S. electricity consumption and installing nine rooftop solar systems.

  • Offering more than 2,900 different products with recycled content.

  • Recycling nearly 18 million ink and toner cartridges from our customers.

    Community

  • Supporting hundreds of nonprofits through Staples and Staples Foundation for Learning donations totaling $12.8 million.

  • Launching a global community presence through support of Ashoka's Youth Venture program in five countries where Staples operates.

  • Helping identify and promote the next generation of Hispanic role models through support of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation.

    Diversity

  • Rolling out a new International Management Trainee Program to develop future leaders who have global perspectives and expertise.

  • Implementing a corporate diversity supplier management system to enhance diversity supplier registration and minority reporting capabilities.

  • Ranking 42nd on DiversityBusiness.com's 2006 list of Top 50 Corporations for Multicultural Business Opportunities.
