Suncor Energy Releases its 2007 Report on Sustainability
(CSRwire) CALGARY, ALBERTA- June 25, 2007 - Suncor Energy Inc. today released its
2007 Report on Sustainability – a comprehensive review of Suncor's
social, environmental and economic performance for the past two years.
The report, entitled 'A Closer Look at Our Journey Toward Sustainable
Development,' profiles Suncor’s progress on a wide range of
sustainability objectives and also takes a detailed look at four key
challenges facing the company: community sustainability, climate change,
water management and labour shortages.
"In every edition, we challenge ourselves to be more frank and offer more
insight on the impacts of our operations," says Gord Lambert, vice
president, sustainable development. "Sometimes it's hard to see it in
black and white but that’s the value of the report. It helps focus our
efforts and keeps us on our path toward sustainability."
Suncor’s Report on Sustainability provides a five-year performance trend
in a number of key areas. Performance highlights from that period
include:
A two-thirds reduction in employee lost-time injury frequency
A record $40 million invested in charitable and non-profit causes
A 14% increase in total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. GHG emission
intensity remained relatively unchanged
A 55% reduction in the amount of water used per barrel of oil
produced
More than $5 billion paid in taxes and royalties
Suncor compiled this report in accordance with the Global Reporting
Initiative G3 Guidelines – an internationally recognized standard in
sustainability reporting. As in previous years, an independent third party
verified a number of performance indicators.
