United Technologies Corp. Receives Special Award at National Trust/HGTV Restore America Gala
(CSRwire) WASHINGTON, D.C.- June 14, 2007 – United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX),
a diversified Fortune 50 global company headquartered in Hartford, Conn.,
was selected as a National Trust for Historic Preservation/HGTV Restore
America Hero. UTC is one of five champions who led efforts to preserve,
restore and revitalize their communities. The other honorees are Mrs.
Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States; the Honorable Steny Hoyer,
Majority Leader of the United States House of Representatives; Bob R.
Simpson, chief executive officer of XTO Energy in Fort Worth; and Bill
Watanabe, executive director of the Little Tokyo Service Center in Los
Angeles. The awards were presented at the Restore America Gala in
Washington, D.C.
While green building concepts are most widely used in new construction,
UTC is setting new standards for employing sustainable design and
high-performance energy systems in the rehabilitation and reuse of
historic structures. Accepting the award on behalf of UTC was Kelly
Romano, president of Building Systems and Services for Carrier Corp., a
UTC business unit.
"At United Technologies, we believe in sustainable development," said
Romano. "We don't choose between growth and sustainability. We pursue both
with passion and precision. Our $1 million gift to the National Trust is
part of UTC's Sustainable Cities agenda. We are proud of our association
with the National Trust, and are thankful for the opportunity to
demonstrate that even historic buildings can go green."
UTC's sustainability principles currently are at work in an innovative
project under way at one of the most significant historic sites in
Washington, D.C. - President Lincoln and Soldier's Home National Monument.
UTC’s technical and financial assistance will enable the Lincoln Cottage
Visitor Education Center to become the first National Trust Historic Site
to use green technology in its restoration. The center will become a model
for sustainable restoration and preservation projects in the future.
"For the past five years, the National Trust has proudly joined with HGTV
to salute the Restore America Heroes who are making significant
contributions to the preservation of America's communities through their
unyielding commitment, vision and leadership," said Richard Moe, president
of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. "The commitment by United
Technologies is an example of the important preservation work being done
across the country, and the National Trust is pleased to honor them with
this prestigious award."
