Alcan Announces Ongoing Four-Year Commitment of Over $6 Million to the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal
JAZZ FESTIVAL HAS BECOME MONTREAL'S SIGNATURE CULTURAL EVENT ENHANCING THE CITY'S REPUTATION AND QUALITY OF LIFE
(CSRwire) MONTREAL- June 5, 2007- CNW Telbec- Alcan Inc. today announced that the
Company has committed more than $6 million over four years to the Festival
International de Jazz de Montréal, confirming Alcan's role as co-presenter
of the Festival through the year 2010.
"This new sponsorship agreement with the Festival International de
Jazz de Montréal underscores Alcan's commitment to the social and
economic vitality of Montréal, our Company's home town. It demonstrates
Alcan's determination to ensure that the true cultural treasures of the
city of Montréal and the province of Québec continue to flourish," said
Dick Evans, President and CEO, Alcan Inc.
Alcan's long-term support will allow the Festival to continue to offer
community-oriented outdoor activities such as the Alcan Musical Park and
the Little Jazz School to families for free. Fun and educational
activities, including free face-painting and making musical instruments
from aluminum, will be available to children of all ages.
Alcan will once again sponsor the Invitation series of concerts,
featuring talented bassist Richard Bona and guitarist Mike Stern. Many
artists will be featured daily on the Alcan stage, situated at the
Saint-Catherine's Street entrance of the Complexe Desjardins. On July 8,
Alcan will also host the grand closing event; a free outdoor concert
featuring French-Algerian musician Rachid Taha, along with other special
guests, on the Festival's main stage.
"Over the years, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal has
become renowned as the world's premier jazz festival. As Montrealers and
founding partners of the Festival, we at Alcan are very proud of this, and
we look forward to playing a role in the Festival's success for years to
come," added Michel Jacques, President and CEO, Alcan Primary Metal Group,
at a press conference today at Montréal's Spectrum theatre.
In keeping with Alcan's commitment to sustainability, the Company will
continue to sponsor the Festival's recycling and waste reduction program.
Last year, the Festival recycled 20.5 tonnes of material, keeping valuable
aluminum out of the waste stream.
"We are very pleased with our partnership with Alcan, who made an
impressive return in 2006 as the Festival's co-presenter. Shortly
following last year's successful partnership, Alcan informed us of their
intention to commit for the future. We are happy to be officially
announcing this agreement today. Alcan's renewed enthusiasm is very
promising, especially this year, and gives us the opportunity to offer
festival goers many more free activities and shows, such as the fantastic
closing party, which will undoubtedly contribute to the Festival's fame
and to Montreal's cultural reputation throughout the world," said Alain
Simard, Festival International de Jazz de Montréal president.
The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal opens on June 28 and
closes on July 8. For more than 11 days and nights, Montreal will roll out
the red carpet for over 2,500 musicians from every corner of the globe.
