Dow Wins 2006 ACC Responsible Care Energy Efficiency Award
(CSRwire) MIDLAND, MI - May 14, 2007. The Dow Chemical Company was named winner of a
2006 American Chemistry Council (ACC) Responsible Care Energy Efficiency
Award. Dow receives an 'Exceptional Merit' award in recognition of its
longstanding energy efficiency and conservation efforts, including an
energy intensity improvement of 22% from 1995 to 2005 and leadership in
external promotion of energy efficiency and conservation.
"We are very pleased to be recognized with an ACC Responsible Care Energy
Efficiency Award," said Dave Kepler, Chief Sustainability Officer. "Energy
efficiency is an important immediate action to help secure a sustainable
energy supply. At the same time, it is instrumental in reducing CO2
emissions and mitigating climate change, the most urgent environmental
issue society faces today. Our efforts to address both issues range from
improving the energy performance in our own operations, to applying our
science and technology to develop alternative energy sources and products
that help consumers be more energy efficient."
The reduction in energy intensity (BTU per pound of product) by 22%
resulted in energy saving of 900 trillion BTUs, enough to power eight
million US homes for a year. "Building on these results, Dow is now
working towards a goal to further reduce energy intensity by 25% from 2005
to 2015," adds Rich Wells, Energy Business Vice President. "In addition, we
have set ourselves a 2015 goal of 2.5% per year reduction greenhouse gas
intensity*."
The award also acknowledges Dow's support for external energy efficiency
campaigns. These include sponsorship of The Alliance to Save Energy's 'The
Power is in Your Hands' energy efficiency campaign, designed to empower
U.S. energy consumers to save money and energy, and collaboration with the
U.S. Government Energy Programs such as the Department of Energy (DOE)
'Save Energy Now' industrial energy efficiency campaign.
In addition to Dow, thirteen other ACC member companies were honored with
a Responsible Care Energy Efficiency Award.
"We honor these companies because they have exemplified the spirit of
energy efficiency that is such an important achievement of our sector,"
said Jack N. Gerard, President & CEO of the ACC. "Not only do we
continually improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
in our own operations, we also contribute the materials that help the
entire U.S. economy be more energy-efficient. Energy saved equals lower
U.S. greenhouse gas emissions."
