Alcoa 2006 Sustainability Reporting Now Available
Alcoa's online sustainability reporting has been updated to reflect 2006
activities. The 2006 Sustainability Highlights document is also available
as a downloadable PDF.
Alcoa Named to FORTUNE Magazine's "Most Admired" List
For the 24th year in a row, Alcoa was named one of FORTUNE Magazine's Most
Admired Companies in the publication’s annual ranking. In 2005, Alcoa was
inducted into the publication’s Hall of Fame list for its consistent high
performance in the magazine’s rankings.
Alcoa CSI Colombia Earns Highest Social Responsibility Rating from
Coca-Cola
Following a third-party assessment of its performance against basic human
rights and labor standards for customer Coca-Cola, the Alcoa Closure
Systems International (CSI) facility in Colombia earned the highest rating
available and a spot at the top of the global beverage manufacturer's chain
of suppliers.
Alcoa Joins Business, Investment Leaders in Climate Call to
Action
Alcoa has joined with a group of businesses and institutional investors
organized by Ceres in a call to action for the U.S. government to
establish a national policy on climate change.
Alcoa Establishes Innovation Center in Russia
Alcoa has established an Innovation Center of Excellence with leading
universities in Russia to work on research and development projects
focused on innovative mining, refining, and smelting technologies.
Alcoa Employees to Research Environment as Earthwatch Fellows
Alcoa employees will again be participating in Earthwatch scientific field
research expeditions around the world that focus primarily on climate
change and global water supply—issues of great importance to Alcoa. The
employees will share their unique experiences through individual diaries
posted on www.alcoa.com.
New Incident Investigation Technique Results in Improvement
By shifting its focus from investigating unsafe conditions and actions
after an incident to existing weaknesses within the organization, Alcoa's
Alumar facility in São Luís, Brazil, eliminated 457 injury
risks and posted its best injury rate ever in 2006.
Union, Management Jointly Work to Decrease Injuries
An effort to improve workplace safety that was spearheaded jointly by
union and management employees at Alcoa's Tennessee Operations achieved a
90% reduction in lost workdays and a 50% decline in the total recordable
rate in 2006.
Suggestion Systems Reduce Costs, Improve EHS, Engage Employees
Half a world apart, two suggestion systems implemented independently in
the same year and with a similar structure are engaging employees and
delivering improved safety and significant cost savings at Alcoa
operations in Jamaica and Western Australia.
Alcoa Embraces Decision on Vatnajokull National Park
Alcoa embraces the decision of Althing (Parliament of Iceland) to
establish Europe's biggest natural reserve. The Vatnajökull National
Park will cover a total of 15,000 square kilometers (just under 6,000
square miles) and include Vatnajökull, Europe's biggest glacier.
Helping High-Risk Youth Prepare for the Future
Alcoa Foundation is partnering with Roca, Inc., a nonprofit community
organization, on innovative projects to train and employ at-risk youth,
funded in part through a US$50,000 Alcoa Foundation grant.
