Every Day is Earth Day at Redemtech
Redemtech Manages Responsible Disposal of Nearly 15 Million Pounds of Obsolete Electronic Equipment in U.S. in 2006
(CSRwire) COLUMBUS, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 2007--Redemtech (www.redemtech.com), a
leading provider of Technology Change Management (TCM) services, announced
that it helped companies properly dispose of nearly 15 million pounds of
obsolete electronic scrap, or e-waste, in the United States in 2006. The
company also diverted an additional 11 million pounds of equipment from
the waste stream through remarketing.
This record amount for the company exemplifies Redemtech's continued
commitment to the safe disposal of today's high-tech waste. The company
has a strict zero-export, zero-landfill, zero-incineration recycling
policy designed to keep hazardous wastes out of landfills; instead,
breaking computers down into raw materials to be reused in the
manufacturing of new or recycled products. Redemtech's recovery and reuse
programs salvage any usable components from the e-waste prior to recycling
to support refurbishing programs that promote reuse and extended equipment
life.
The technology recycled through Redemtech's U.S. operations included more
than 50,000 desktops, 175,000 monitors, 75,000 printers and 6,000 servers.
The remarketed technology included nearly 120,000 desktops, 72,000
monitors, 23,000 printers, 61,000 laptops and 16,000 servers.
According to the U.S. EPA, as much as 4 percent of municipal solid waste
is e-scrap. Americans discarded more than 154 million computers in 2005,
not counting game systems, cell phones, PDAs and MP3 players. The Basel
Action Network (BAN) estimated in a recent report (available at www.ban.org) that up to 80
percent of the e-waste that is recycled is exported overseas to
dismantling shops, which lack the processes to prevent hazardous materials
from harming workers and the environment.
"E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the industrial world,
growing at three times the rate of other waste material. A significant
volume of e-waste, especially computers, continues to be shipped to
emerging countries where it ends up in landfills, poisoning the earth with
toxic chemicals," said Bob Houghton, president of Redemtech. "At Redemtech,
where true environmental stewardship is a cornerstone of our business,
every day is Earth Day. One of our primary missions is to ensure that
every piece of obsolete electronic equipment is responsibly recycled and
any usable components are salvaged."
According to the Gartner Group, 75 percent of PCs decommissioned in the
U.S. are four years old or less, creating a significant opportunity to
reduce e-waste through lifecycle extension programs, such as refurbishing,
remarketing and charitable donation. Redemtech has a number of programs to
extend the lifecycle of computers, including a unique program that
encourages large companies to donate computers to non-profits by providing
free recovery and recycling services to non-profits receiving computers
through Redemtech.
"It's very important for the health of the environment that we divert from
the landfills any usable equipment and remarket and repurpose it," Houghton
said. "The importance of this measure is affirmed by the EPA's campaign
that encourages organizations to donate or recycle their used electronic
equipment."
All of the electronic equipment disposed and remarketed by Redemtech
undergoes a rigorous sanitation process designed to remove sensitive data
and licensed software, and prevent damaging security breaches. The company
also works with Brink's, Inc., to provide a secure transport option that
protects highly sensitive data during transport of computers that have
been taken off network to be reused, resold or recycled.
Redemtech is in compliance with best practices defined by the Basel Action
Network (BAN) and Silicon Valley Toxic Coalition. The company is a
signatory of The Electronics Recycler's Pledge of True Stewardship, which
imposes the world's most rigorous criteria for e-waste recycling, and its
environmental management program is ISO 14001 certified.
