Waste Management and Charley Hoffman announce formation of the Green Glove Charity - Benefits Keep America Beautiful
(CSRwire) HOUSTON, TX - March 27, 2007 - In his debut on the lush green lawn of the
Redstone Golf Club during the 61st annual Shell Houston Open, PGA golfer
Charley Hoffman will sport a green golf glove to represent both his new
sponsor, Waste Management, and the formation of his Green Glove
Charity.
The Charley Hoffman/Waste Management Green Glove Charity will benefit Keep
Houston Beautiful, which will receive donations raised through the end of
May. Contributions received after that time will be used to further
enhance Keep America Beautiful projects nationwide. The timing coincides
with the Great American Cleanup, an annual event in which millions of
volunteers clean up communities across the country.
The announcement will be made at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, in the media
center at the Shell Houston Open. Charley Hoffman will be joined by Waste
Management CEO David Steiner and Senior Vice President of Marketing Dave
Aardsma.
Hoffman goes into the Shell Houston Open ranked in 13th overall in the
FedExCup points standings. Earlier this year, the young golfer won the Bob
Hope Classic and aims to achieve victory in Houston. He said his
sponsorship with Waste Management “fits like a glove” because both he
and the company have strong views on environmental stewardship.
“I’m from San Diego, California, so I firmly believe in the benefits
of recycling and of cleaning up the environment,” said Hoffman, 30.
“I’m also familiar with the green Waste Management trucks that serve
my hometown, and that’s why I’m proud to become a team member of Waste
Management’s dedicated professionals. I will wear a green glove at the
Shell Houston Open to proclaim my new relationship with Waste
Management.”
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the average
American produces 4.5 pounds of garbage every day. Waste Management
collects and processes that waste in an environmentally safe and
beneficial manner through its recycling, waste-to-energy, landfill and
landfill-gas-to-energy operations. Last year, the company recycled more
than 5.5 million tons of waste material, saving enough energy to power
833,000 homes. Waste Management also produced 470 megawatts of green
renewable energy, enough to power about 400,000 homes or replace about
seven million barrels of oil per year.
“Waste Management is North America’s largest recycler, and, just like
Charley, we believe in protecting the earth and environment as we do our
business,” Steiner said. “Our relationship with Charley is especially
harmonious because Waste Management encourages the game of golf. We have
created several golf courses at closed landfills, and we are working with
a major developer to create even more golf courses on Waste Management
landfills.
“Now, because of sponsoring Charley from tee to green and establishing
the Green Glove Charity, more than ever we can say from every day
collection to environmental protection, Think Green.â Think Waste
Management.”
Hoffman and Steiner will play in a foursome in the Shell Houston Open’s
Pro-Am tournament.
As a rookie, Hoffman posted five top-10 finishes on his way to a top 100
finish on the PGA Tour 2006 money list. He is one of 11 Nationwide Tour
2005 graduates to retain a PGA Tour card this year. He finished in the top
10 of the PGA longest drive contest last year with a 304-yard drive. Last
year, Hoffman’s scoring average was 70.63, ranking him in 44th place on
the PGA Tour, and his putting average of 1.753 ranked him 28th.
