Deloitte welcomes new partner Johanne Gélinas
Former federal environment commissioner shifting focus from public service to corporate Canada
(CSRwire) TORONTO - March 26, 2007 - Deloitte is pleased to announce the admission of
Johanne Gélinas, former federal Commissioner of the Environment and
Sustainable Development, to its partnership. She joins Enterprise Risk,
Canada's largest risk management consulting practice, to lead the Montreal
office’s Environment, Health, Safety & Sustainability (EHS&S) group.
Ms. Gélinas will manage a variety of responsibilities including
advising Deloitte's clients on how to better understand, plan and manage
sustainability and corporate responsibility issues including climate
change, emissions trading, contingent financial environmental liabilities,
verification of non-financial information and risks, environmental and
sustainability strategy, implementation and reporting, and stakeholder
engagement.
Deloitte Canada's Managing Partner, Enterprise Risk, Eddie Leschiutta,
welcomed Ms. Gélinas saying, "Johanne's knowledge and experience
will add enormous value to our firm and our clients. Her work to date
speaks volumes to her commitment and passion for the effective management
of environmental, health and safety risks. She is regarded in Canada and
around the world for her insight and forward thinking. In addition to
strengthening the corporate responsibility reputation for our clients, she
will help them deliver long-term sustainable value to their
stakeholders."
Says Ms. Gélinas, "Deloitte is clearly committed to helping
Canadian organizations take a leading, proactive approach to managing
environmental and sustainable development issues, which is very important
to me. My goal, at the end of the day, remains the same: to help move
Canada forward on a sustainable path. I'm very much looking forward to
working with Valerie Chort, the national EHS&S leader, and the rest of the
Deloitte team across Canada to do just that."
Bringing environmental issues to the forefront
Ms. Gélinas was appointed Commissioner of the Environment and
Sustainable Development in August 2000. She has had a long career as an
advisor to business, as well as to federal and provincial governments on
environmental and sustainable development issues. Prior to joining the
Office of the Auditor General, Ms. Gélinas served for 10 years as
Quebec's Commissioner of the Bureau d'audiences publiques sur
l'environnement (BAPE).
From 1995 to 2000, Ms. Gélinas was a member of the National Round
Table on the Economy and the Environment and chaired its Task Force on
Sustainable Transportation. She has also been heavily involved in climate
change issues.
Ms. Gélinas received an undergraduate degree in Human Geography and
a Master's degree in Environmental Sciences from the Université du
Qué bec á Montréal and is widely published.
