Wind Power in the Wild; Free Public Forum to Highlight Building Energy Conference and Trade Show
Bill McKibben is among four noted panelists
(CSRwire) Greenfield, MA -- Wind Power in the Wild, a free Public Forum
focusing on achieving ecological and energy security in the northeast,
will highlight the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association’s (NESEA)
32nd annual Building Energy Conference and Trade Show at Boston’s
Seaport World Trade Center on March 13-15, 2007. The forum, moderated by
Jim Braude, Host of NECN’s NewsNight and Co-host of Eagan and Braude
96.6 FM, will be in the Seaport World Trade Center Amphitheater on Tuesday
evening, March 13 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The forum will include a brief
update on the status of the Cape Wind Project.
Braude, along with a panel of wilderness and renewable energy advocates,
will engage the audience in a lively discussion of how to achieve
ecological AND energy security in the North¬east. If the fundamental
purpose of renewable energy is to lighten our load on the earth, then
energy advocates must consider how these “cleaner, greener” sources of
energy affect wildlife and ecological systems. Conversely, wilderness
advocates must determine what level of ecological impact is acceptable if
renewable energy is to become more than a mere novelty in the context of
our changing climate and resource limitations.
The forum’s panel of experts includes:
Bill McKibben, Recognized authority on climate change and author of
The End of Nature
Michael Kellett, Co-founder and Executive Director of RESTORE
Eleanor Tillinghast, Co-founder, Green Berkshires, Inc.
Steven Terry, Senior Vice President for Corporate and Legal Affairs,
Green Mountain Power
“These panelists are not only experts but also activists who have taken
bold steps to improve our world,” said James P. Batchelor, FAIA, LEED
AP, President and CEO of Arrowstreet, and co-chair of
BuildingEnergy07. “Bill McKibben, for example, is
inviting everyone to join the Interfaith Walk for Climate Rescue on
March 16-24, a 9-day walk from Northampton to Boston in support of
political action to address climate change. On March 24 at Copley Square,
the event will conclude with what is expected to be the largest global
warming demonstration in the country. In addition, McKibben has helped to
spearhead Step It Up 2007, a National Day of Climate Action on April 14,
where hundreds of rallies will be held across the country to urge Congress
to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050.”
With a theme of Building for a Changing Climate,
BuildingEnergy07 is expected to draw over 2,500 attendees
for three days of workshops and sessions, presented by over 180 U.S. and
international experts, and networking opportunities to strengthen
knowledge about climate change and ways to incorporate proven methods for
reducing building emissions. BuildingEnergy07 is designed
for architects, engineers, builders, city and town planners, building
systems designers, developers, facility managers, investors, policy
makers, and real estate professionals, as well as students and others
interested in renewable energy and green building practices.
The Trade Show, featuring 150 exhibitors, is open on March 14 from 10:30
am – 7:00 pm and on March 15 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. The public is
invited to attend the Trade Show for $30 on March 14 and for $20 on March
15. Trade Show attendees will learn about energy–efficient and
environmentally friendly building products such as structural panels,
doors, windows, adhesives, foam insulation, and heating and cooling
technologies. Alternate Energy Center of Plymouth, MA, is sponsoring the
Trade Show.
Other highlights drawing attention to BuildingEnergy07
include: on March 14-15, a compelling visual arts exhibit with images of
Climate Change from around the world and an alternative transportation
showcase, featuring displays by Toyota Motor Sales, the Hybrid Center of
Massachusetts, and the MIT Solar Electric Vehicle Team. On March 14 only,
there will be live and silent auctions of recycled, organic and natural
items with an overall value of over $19,000. Global Meltdown, an ice
sculpture of Earth, commissioned specifically for
BuildingEnergy07, will represent global warming as it melts
throughout the day. Within the ice Earth are custom-designed glass art
pieces all of which will emerge as the sculpture melts. All glass
objects, along with an e-bluehorizon certificate for retiring carbon
emissions in one household for a year, will be raffled off at the Live
Auction that evening. On March 15, there will be a tour of the Seaport
World Trade Center’s green Seaport Hotel from 12:30 – 1:30 pm to learn
about their “Seaport Saves” program. In addition, the premier of
Transforming Energy, a documentary about alternative energy as a solution
to climate change will be shown from 12:30 – 1:30 pm March 15.
