Mattel Named One of the "100 Best Corporate Citizens" for 2007
(CSRwire) EL SEGUNDO, CA.- Feb. 14, 2007 – Mattel, Inc., the world’s largest
toymaker, was today named to the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” list,
which is drawn from more than 1,100 of the largest U.S. publicly traded
companies. Mattel ranks in the 92 position.
“At Mattel, we believe that how we achieve success is just as important
as the success itself,” said Robert A. Eckert, Mattel Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer. “Our commitment to sound corporate citizenship is at
the very heart of our business, and is reflected in our company’s
values.”
Underscoring its long-term commitment to socially responsible practices,
Mattel released its second Global Citizenship Report earlier this year,
which provides detailed information about the company's environmental and
social performance, results, challenges and strategies for continuous
improvement, and explains how the company’s global citizenship
initiatives are linked to its core values: Play with Passion, Play to
Grow, Play Together and Play Fair. Mattel is the only toy company to
produce such a report.
With the launch of its Global Manufacturing Principles (GMP) in November
1997, Mattel became one of the first consumer products companies to employ
independent monitoring of its manufacturing facilities and make findings
available to the public, and continues to be the only toy company to have
such a program in place. Mattel’s GMP, which marks a 10-year milestone
in 2007, is the cornerstone of the company's ongoing commitment to ethical
manufacturing practices by seeking to ensure that wages, working and living
conditions, and employee access to management, are just and fair, as well
as to assure protection of the environment.
“The 100 Best distinguish themselves from their peers at other large
public companies by embracing higher standards—combining strong
financial performance with responsible practices on environmental and
social issues,” said Michael Connor, Publisher and Editor of CRO
magazine. “We salute the 100 Best for their leadership roles in the
field of corporate responsibility.”
About the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” List
Now in its 8th year, the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” list identifies
companies that excel at serving a variety of stakeholders well. The list
was developed by Business Ethics magazine, which was incorporated last
year into The CRO (www.thecro.com). Companies considered for the list
include U.S. firms in the Russell 1000, the S&P 500, and the Domini 400
Social Index. Companies are ranked on service in eight stakeholder
categories: shareholders, community, governance, diversity, employees,
environment, human rights, and product. Social scores use KLD’s
assessment of “strengths” and “concerns” demonstrated in each
category. The shareholder score is based on three-year average total
return (stock appreciation plus dividends) through year-end 2006. More
details regarding the 100 Best Corporate Citizens list are available on
the CRO web site at www.thecro.com.
