122 Students Earn 'Technical Minority Scholarships' from Xerox
(CSRwire) STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 25, 2007--Xerox Corporation (NYSE:
XRX) has awarded its annual Xerox Technical Minority Scholarships to 122
graduate and undergraduate students from across the country to recognize
their high academic achievement in the fields of science, engineering and
technology.
Since the program began in 1987 - 20 years ago - the Technical
Minority Scholarship program has provided nearly $2 million in funding to
help more than 1,500 students achieve their academic and professional
goals.
"A technology company like Xerox relies on great ideas and top talent
for our success. So we believe it's a smart investment to help the
students of today, ensuring there's a diverse pool of technical experts
for the work force of tomorrow," said Joseph Cahalan, vice president, The
Xerox Foundation, which funds the scholarship program. The 122 winners are
from more than 26 states and Puerto Rico, and they attend one of about 100
colleges and universities, including Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell
University, Georgia Institute of Technology, North Carolina A&T State
University, Purdue University, Rochester Institute of Technology,
University of California, and Penn State.
Chosen from 800 qualified applicants, the majority of the scholarship
winners receive $1,000 toward college tuition costs for the 2006-2007
school year, and 12 scholarships are granted in amounts up to $10,000, for
a total Xerox investment of more than $160,000. To access the list of this
year's winners, hometowns and universities, visit http://www.xerox.com/technicalminoritywinners.
Scholarships are made available to minority students enrolled in
technical degree programs at the bachelor's degree level or above.
Eligible students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and
show financial need. Recipients of the scholarship were notified by letter
in December. Students are allowed to reapply for the scholarship on an
annual basis, and several dozen students are multiple recipients.
The Technical Minority Scholarship program is just one of several ways
that Xerox aims to support education and encourage students to pursue
technical careers. The company provides grants to university research
programs, offers scholarship support to more than 140 colleges and
universities, matches employees' donations to educational institutions,
offers challenging internships and co-op opportunities, champions science
in elementary schools through its educational "Science Consultants
Program," and mentors high-school FIRST robotics-competition teams.
