Baxter Highlights Social, Economic and Environmental Performance in Seventh Annual Sustainability Report
Company Recognized for Sustainability Performance and Leadership in Medical Products Industry by Dow Jones Sustainability Index
(CSRwire) DEERFIELD, Ill.- Baxter International Inc. (NYSE: BAX) announced
today its social, economic and environmental performance in its 2005
Sustainability Report: 75 Years of Saving and Sustaining Lives. This
report, which demonstrates the breadth and depth of Baxter's
sustainability performance, commemorates the company's 75th anniversary of
innovation and leadership in healthcare through historical photographs and
company milestones.
Baxter's sustainability performance and leadership were recently
recognized as the company was named 2006 Medical Products Industry Leader
of both the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) and the Dow
Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America), the world's
first benchmarks tracking the sustainability performance of top companies.
Baxter's leadership position resulted from best scores across a number of
performance areas, including bioethics, codes of conduct, environmental
performance and policy/management, talent attraction and retention, and
social and environmental reporting. 2006 marks the eighth consecutive
year Baxter has been listed in the DJSI since its launch in 1999.
Baxter's 2005 Sustainability Report, available in print and online
formats (
http://www.baxter.com/sustainability), is aligned with the Global
Reporting Initiative guidelines and features in-depth reporting across key
sustainability topics, including community support; corporate governance
and business practices; employees; environment, health and safety; product
responsibility and sustainability strategy. Additionally, for the first
time, the report covers Baxter's economic impacts and the sustainability
performance of the company's global supply chain. The report provides a
balanced view of Baxter's programs and performance through extensive
performance data, case studies and personal perspectives of external
sustainability experts.

Highlights from the 2005 report include:
Total 2005 environmental income, savings and cost avoidance of $85.8
million, up from $70.2 million in 2004;
New 2010 environmental, product stewardship, occupational health,
safety and industrial hygiene goals;
Total giving by Baxter and The Baxter International Foundation
exceeded $35 million, including product donations, cash contributions and
foundation grants;
A discussion of Baxter's sustainability priority setting process and
the formation of a cross-functional Sustainability Steering Committee;
Company disaster preparedness and response activities, including
vaccine development and manufacture to protect against bio-terrorism and
infectious diseases, including avian flu;
Baxter's participation in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's
100,000 Lives Campaign, an initiative to save 100,000 lives in U.S.
hospitals over 18 months through the adoption of best-safety practices;
and
The launch of a new line of IV solution containers made of non-PVC
(non-polyvinyl chloride) film, containing no latex and offering a
DEHP-free [di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate-free] fluid pathway to patients.
