Dell and Goodwill Industries of San Antonio Launch Convenient, No-Charge Computer Recycling Service for Consumers; 'Reconnect San Antonio' Plans to Divert Almost 2 Million Pounds Annually from Landfills
(CSRwire) SAN ANTONIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 20, 2006--Goodwill Industries of San
Antonio and Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) today introduced Reconnect San Antonio, a
free drop-off program for recycling of unwanted computers by area
residents.
The pilot program helps protect the environment through the
responsible recycling or reuse of computer equipment, and provides
residents a convenient opportunity to support a local charity.
Reconnect San Antonio takes advantage of the existing donation and
retail infrastructure of Goodwill and the recycling experience and
resources of Dell to offer a proactive, community-based solution to
environmentally responsible electronics disposal.
The goal of the pilot program is to divert nearly two million pounds
of used computers and computer equipment from landfills over one year and
to provide consumer education on the importance of proper computer
disposal, while creating job opportunities for individuals with
disabilities and other employment barriers throughout the San Antonio
region.
"I want to thank Dell and Goodwill for initiating this new
partnership," said San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger. "This effort will
provide our citizens with more solutions to the challenge of electronics
disposal. As a city, we are proud to support this initiative, and I have
every confidence it will be successful."
Goodwill will accept donated computer equipment from residents at all
retail stores and donation centers in San Antonio. Goodwill will sort it
for reuse or recycling, and equipment that meets certain standards will be
refurbished and resold at Goodwill's computer store at 4914 NW Loop 410.
All proceeds from Goodwill's refurbished computer sales will support its
non-profit job training and community programs.
Residents will be responsible for removing data from hard drives and
other storage media before donating to Goodwill.
"This new alliance will really expand our existing electronics
recycling program and further Goodwill's employment services and support
mission at the same time," said Bob Dugas, CEO of Goodwill Industries of
San Antonio. "Working with Dell will help us ensure we are implementing
the latest environmentally sound recycling practices."
This pilot program is part of Dell's efforts to provide consumers
convenient and easy recycling. Dell recently announced a new policy of
recycling all Dell-branded products for no charge.
"Working with San Antonio's Goodwill highlights Dell's commitment to
making computer recycling easy and affordable for consumers," said Shawn
Dennis, vice president of global branding for Dell. "Our alliance with
Goodwill is designed for expansion and we're confident it will eventually
serve as a model other communities will voluntarily adopt."
Other Goodwill-Dell pilot programs are under way in Austin (15
counties in Central Texas), San Francisco (Marin, San Francisco and San
Mateo counties), San Diego County and throughout the state of Michigan.
Beginning today, area residents can call toll-free, 1-800-483-9455 or
