Report Highlights SC Johnson's Commitment to Leadership

SC Johnson Challenges Top Corporations to Reduce Environmental Impact

(CSRwire) Racine, WI- In 1886, innovation at SC Johnson created a quality paste wax to protect beloved parquet floors. Now, 120 years later, SC Johnson's innovation is doing everything from protecting people from dangerous mosquito-borne illnesses to cleaning showers at the touch of a button. Launching more than 200 new products this year, SC Johnson continues to lead the market with environmentally responsible products that make life a little easier and homes cleaner. The company's leading brands and long standing core values are highlighted in the newly released public report, Doing What's Right: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow.

"This report highlights the spirit of goodwill and product innovation that has endured at this family company for five generations," said SC Johnson's Chairman and CEO Fisk Johnson. "Winning in business is not just about performance and success; it is also about doing what's right - right for the planet, right for people, right for the next generation."

Continuing that commitment, SC Johnson will again offset the carbon emissions associated with the production and distribution of its public report through a contribution to Conservation International, and their on-the-ground partner the Wildlife Conservation Society. This will help protect more than a thousand acres of tropical rain forest in one of the most pristine, yet threatened, areas of Madagascar. In addition, SC Johnson is the first corporation to establish a Challenge Grant encouraging other companies to do the same. For each company that offsets the environmental impact associated with the printing of their own public report, through the work of Conservation International, SC Johnson will make a matching donation to a total of $50,000.

Celebrating the 50th anniversaries of Glade® air care products and Raid® insecticides, the report also highlights SC Johnson's long standing dedication to meeting the needs of consumers. Both brands have led their product categories with innovative products, such as a continuous action electric insect repellent from Raid® and the first plug-in air freshener made by Glade®.

Products new to the market this year include the first-of-its-kind Scrubbing Bubbles® Automatic Shower Cleaner - which automatically cleans the shower with the touch of a button; Ziploc® Double Zipper - offering the tightest seal ever; Raid® Earth Options™ - with plant based active ingredients; and Autan® Family After-Sun Insect Repellent launched in Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom - an insect repellent with the extra benefit of an after-sun moisturizer.

Additional highlights in this year's report:

  • Using Earth Responsible Raw Materials: Using the company's Greenlist™ process to move two years ahead of schedule in continuously improving the already high environmental profile of its products - an accomplishment that earned SC Johnson the Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership, a Presidential Award presented at The White House.

  • Reducing Emissions and Greenhouse Gases: Substantially exceeding the voluntary greenhouse gas reduction goals set through the Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Leaders program. SC Johnson was among the first corporations to meet these goals.

  • Harnessing Cleaner Energy: Generating the company's own electricity with cogeneration turbines that support SC Johnson's largest manufacturing site worldwide. By last year, SC Johnson was using 34 percent less fossil fuel than 2000, and had reduced greenhouse gas emission by nearly 17 percent in just one year.

  • Preventing Insect-Borne Diseases: Supporting malaria prevention efforts in South Africa that have provided educational information and materials to almost 50,000 people in high-risk areas.

  • Advancing Social Progress and Public Health: Sponsoring the Base of the Pyramid Protocol™ that is now generating mutually valuable and sustainable enterprises in Kenya.

  • Workplace Excellence: Continuing to be recognized as a great place to work. SC Johnson was again named among the Top 10 of FORTUNE magazine's 100 Best Companies to Work for in America, and earned similar recognition in countries around the world.

SC Johnson limits the number of printed editions and encourages distribution of the company's public report via the Internet, at www.scjohnson.com and www.dowhatsright.com.
