Capital One, Washington Nationals and Junior Achievement Announce ''Sliding into Succe$$''; Chad Cordero to Launch Program That Teaches Students Important Financial Education Skills
(CSRwire) June 13, 2006--Today, Capital One, Washington Nationals' Chad Cordero and
Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area launched an innovative
financial educational initiative -- "Sliding Into Succe$$." The
interactive curriculum, based on baseball, will give approximately 1,000
students an opportunity to learn math skills, as well as basic budgeting
and money management skills. Capital One, Washington Nationals and Junior
Achievement of the National Capital Area created this program to empower
students to work independently and as part of a team.
As part of the program, students will develop their own fantasy
baseball team by calculating batting averages using individual player
statistics. Students then build their team by evaluating various trade
options and make player selections while staying within a specified
budget.
"Sliding into Succe$$ is a community-business partnership at its
best," said Carolyn Berkowitz, vice president of Community Affairs at
Capital One. "Capital One, Washington Nationals and Junior Achievement of
the National Capital Area are each delivering what they know best to the
children of the Greater Washington region. The kids are the winners,
learning financial education and other vital life skills from local
heroes."
Washington Nationals All-Star Relief Pitcher Chad Cordero will visit
with students at area schools or educational venues in the metropolitan DC
area and during pre-game outings at RFK Stadium. At twenty games through
September, fifty students, parents and teachers from twelve different
youth-serving organizations will receive game tickets, giveaway bags and
have an opportunity for an autograph session with Chad Cordero.
"Thanks to Capital One and Junior Achievement of the National Capital
Area for stepping up to the plate to deliver this innovative and
educational program to the children in our region," said Chad Cordero,
Washington Nationals All-Star Relief Pitcher. "I look forward to working
with the participants and sharing my insight into baseball with the
kids."
Participating organizations include Asian American Leadership,
Empowerment, & Development for Youth and Families, Beacon House, Concerned
Black Men, Inc. of Washington, DC, Darrell Youth Life Foundation, Ferebee
Hope Elementary School, Kid Power - DC, Inc., Linking Communities for
Educational Access, PR Harris Educational Center, Smithsonian Anacostia
Museum and Center for African American History and Culture.
