Dell Drafts Vince Young for Tennessee Youth Technology Program; Tennessee Titan to Support Middle-School Students in Dell TechKnow Course
(CSRwire) NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 2, 2006--Dell (NASDAQ:DELL)
and All-American quarterback turned Tennessee Titan Vince Young today
announced that he will lend his support to Dell's Middle Tennessee
TechKnow program, an after-school curriculum that provides underserved
middle-school students access to technology and 21st-century skills.
Mr. Young's support and connection with the program, currently running
in seven Metro Nashville Public Schools, will begin later this year. Young
joined Dell CEO Kevin Rollins here today to discuss the association at a
news conference with Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen announcing Dell's
intention to expand its Tennessee employment to up to 1,000 people.
Mr. Young, who volunteered at Austin-area elementary schools while a
student and All-American quarterback for the University of Texas, will
begin visiting students this fall at the seven Metro Nashville Public
Schools that host the Dell TechKnow program. He'll talk with them about
the importance of technology and education in achieving their life
goals.
"I'm enjoying becoming part of the Tennessee Titan family, and I'm
excited to become an active part of the community," Mr. Young said. "I've
learned a lot about Dell's TechKnow program and the impact it's making on
children, particularly here in Tennessee. I look forward to working with
Dell to help these children learn new skills and build the confidence to
set goals and work toward them."
"Vince Young has shown, both through his leadership on the playing
field and his work with Austin-area students, a unique ability to inspire
young people to achieve their full potential," said Mr. Rollins. "His
personal commitment, drive and integrity make him an outstanding role
model for students in this important program. We're proud to have him
associated with Dell TechKnow."
The Dell TechKnow program is a self-paced, after-school course in which
students learn how to take apart and rebuild a computer, install and use
software and access the Internet while learning teamwork, collaboration
and communication skills. Upon completion of the program, students take
home a refurbished Dell desktop computer loaded with Microsoft(R) software
and receive one year of Internet access at no charge from America
Online.
About 280 Nashville-area students participate in the Dell TechKnow
program each school year. More than 700 students -- 90 percent of those
who started -- have successfully completed the TechKnow program in Middle
Tennessee since its inception in the fall of 2002.
More than 10,000 students in 43 school districts in the U.S. and Canada
have successfully completed their participation in Dell's TechKnow. More
