Shaklee Earth Day Campaign Targets Global Warming
Shaklee Corporation to plant one million trees across North America
(CSRwire) Pleasanton, CA- To mark Earth Day 2006 and in celebration of 50
years of environmental stewardship, Shaklee announces its international
environmental campaign to raise awareness of global warming - A Million
Trees. A Million Dreams. Inspired by the visionary work of 2004
Nobel Peace laureate Dr. Wangari Maathai and her Green Belt Movement,
Shaklee will implement a tree planting campaign across the United States
and Canada, encouraging the company's 750,000 Distributors to organize
tree planting events at the grass roots level in their respective
communities. Shaklee has set a goal to plant over one million trees
throughout North America to raise the awareness of global warming and help
offset a significant portion of the CO2 the company produces. Shaklee will
also donate $100,000 to Dr. Wangari Maathai's Green Belt Movement so that
she can plant another one million trees in Kenya.
"This year is particularly important for Shaklee because we are
celebrating our 50th Anniversary, and in honor of our anniversary, we are
inaugurating our biggest global environmental campaign on Earth Day - A
Million Trees. A Million Dreams," says Roger Barnett, Chairman and
CEO of Shaklee Corporation. "The Green Belt Movement shares Shaklee's
model for promoting environmental sustainability. We would like to
duplicate the efforts of the Green Belt Movement in the United States and
Canada. I thank Dr. Wangari Maathai for being such an inspiration to the
people of Kenya and to people around the world and for setting an example
for social responsibility and environmental activism."
On April 25th, Shaklee Corporation will welcome Dr. Wangari Maathai to its
corporate headquarters in Pleasanton, CA for a special tree planting
ceremony to celebrate Shaklee's global environmental initiative. Barnett
will also present Dr. Wangari Maathai with a check for $100,000 to plant
one million trees in Kenya through the Green Belt Movement.
Shaklee Corporation is the number one natural nutrition company in the
United States and has an impressive 50-year history as a pioneer in
healthy living and a leader in health and environmental issues. Dr.
Forrest C. Shaklee began the company's commitment to products that improve
the health of people without harming the planet when he founded the company
in 1956. The company's vast array of product categories includes
nutritional supplements, home cleaning products, air and water purifiers,
plus beauty and skin care products that combine the best of nature and
science.
Shaklee has a rich history of environmental stewardship and activism.
Shaklee has been active in the area of global warming since 1986 when the
company funded a research project to the Arctic with explorer Will Steger
to measure the impact of global warming on the icecaps as well as research
expeditions in 1989 and 1996 to measure the acceleration of the melting
icecaps. Continuing its strong commitment to global warming, in 1989,
Shaklee helped Sir Edmund Hillary's American Himalayan Foundation plant
one million trees in Nepal. In 2000, Shaklee decided to take steps to
offset its CO2 emissions, with the objective of having a net zero impact
on global warming. As a result, Shaklee became the first company in the
United States to be certified Climate Neutral when it invested in
fossil fuel reduction projects to directly offset the amount of CO2 the
company created. Some of those projects included sponsoring a rural
electrification project in Sri Lanka to replace kerosene lamps with solar
photovoltaics to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and replacing highly
polluting boilers in the Portland, Oregon school district.
In 2002 Shaklee received the U.S. EPA's International Climate Protection
Award as well as the Environmental Stewardship International Award from
Social Accountability International for leadership on global warming.
Shaklee's environmental activism also extends to its product line. In
1960, they developed Shaklee Basic-H®, one of the nation's first
biodegradable household cleaners, long before the term "biodegradable"
became part of the lexicon. Last year, to mark Earth Day 2005, Shaklee
donated proceeds from the sale of Shaklee Basic-H® to The Green Belt
Movement.
