Toyota vehicles stand out in 2006 EPA fuel economy ratings
The EPA's 2006 Fuel Economy Guide places Toyota cars, trucks, SUVs,
station wagons, and minivans in the top ten of more EPA vehicle categories
than any other brand. Additionally, the sum of Toyota vehicles in the top
ten of all EPA categories is greater than those of any other maker.
Ratings are based on EPA estimated city mileage, and actual mileage may
vary. Toyota and Scion vehicles hold the number one position in the
Midsize Car, Subcompact Car, and Small Station Wagon categories for
gasoline-powered vehicles.
Prius News: "mileage marathon" tops 100 mpg; new options for
2006
In a "hypermileage" attempt, five hybrid owners assembled near
Pittsburgh earlier this year to push the limits of Prius fuel economy. The
result: a whopping 109.3 average miles per gallon in a stock, unmodified
Prius using unleaded regular gasoline. The team drove 1,397 miles along a
15-mile street course on 12.8 gallons in just under 48 hours. The highest
mileage for a single driving shift was 120.6 mpg.
The recently released 2006 Prius has new features that were
unavailable in early earlier model years. A backup camera, MP3/WMA
playback capability, auxiliary audio jack, and an enhanced voice-activated
navigation system can be had in some of the eight available option
packages.
Toyota wins awards for Highlander Hybrid and environmental
actions
Popular Mechanics has awarded its Energy Efficiency Award to
the 2006 Highlander Hybrid. The Highlander Hybrid won in competition
against all of the cars, trucks, and SUVs that Popular Mechanics
reviewed.
For the fourth consecutive year, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana
(TMMI) has received Indiana's 2005 Governor's Award for Environmental
Excellence. TMMI was recognized for achieving five years of continuous
environmental improvement, including educational and outreach programs.
TMMI's production line-side waste recycling and cartridge paint systems
are just two of the projects that led to significant environmental
benefits. TMMI's environmental management system has resulted in a 64
percent reduction in volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, 30 percent
less energy usage, and a 33 percent lowering of both water consumption and
hazardous waste generation.
The Natural Resources Council of America presented Toyota Motor Sales
North America and the National Audubon Society with an Award of
Achievement in Partnership for the construction of urban environmental
centers. Toyota contributed $1 million to the Toyota Endowment Fund for
Environmental Education for the Audubon Center at Prospect Park, Brooklyn,
and $1 million to the endowment fund for the Audubon Center at Debs Park in
Los Angeles.
Toyota sponsors Environmental Media Awards
In October, Toyota was the Presenting Sponsor of the 15th Annual
Environmental Media Association (EMA) Awards in Los Angeles. The EMA
Awards honor people who write and produce film and TV productions that
expand awareness of environmental issues. Award categories include feature
and dramatic films, plus episodic drama and comedy. Former Vice President
Al Gore was the keynote speaker and addressed the impact of environmental
messages in the media.
Toyota announces worldwide environmental grants
Toyota has selected the 2005 recipients for the Toyota Environmental
Activities Grant Program. A total of 170 million yen (approx. $1.6
million) will be awarded to organizations in eight countries in Europe,
Asia, North America, and South America. Grants include support of rural
