Green Mountain Power Publishes First Corporate Responsibility Report
(CSRwire) COLCHESTER, Vt.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 30, 2005--Green Mountain
Power (NYSE: GMP) today issued its first Corporate Responsibility Report,
documenting the Company's progress towards sustainability. Using the
Global Reporting Initiative guidelines, Green Mountain Power describes the
environmental, social and financial dimensions of its operations.
"All our stakeholders, including employees, shareholders and the
communities we serve, expect us to be accountable for our actions.
Publishing a corporate responsibility report is an important way to
communicate transparently about where we have performed well and where we
need to improve," said Chris Dutton, Green Mountain Power's President and
Chief Executive Officer. This is a new report that will be published each
year in addition to the corporation's annual report to shareholders.
The decision to migrate from an environmental report to a Corporate
Responsibility Report was an outgrowth of Green Mountain Power's renewed
focus on environmental improvement. After the Company emerged from its
financial crisis in the late 1990's, senior management took a harder look
at how to achieve a level of environmental responsibility beyond mere
compliance with laws and regulations. According to Mr. Dutton, "Those of
us who do business in Vermont understand that we have a responsibility to
contribute in meaningful ways to the economic health of the region, while
doing our best to protect and enhance the environmental and social
qualities of life."
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) uses a multi-stakeholder process
to develop and disseminate globally applicable Sustainability Reporting
Guidelines. The Guidelines were created for voluntary use by organizations
for reporting on the economic, environmental and social dimensions of their
activities, products and services. GRI is a collaborator of the United
Nations Environment Program and works in cooperation with the UN Global
Compact.
Green Mountain Power's Corporate Responsibility Report, consisting of 44
pages, is divided into three sections: financial reporting, environmental
reporting and social reporting. The document is designed to be accessible
and easy to read, while noting which Global Reporting Initiative
Indicators are addressed.
Green Mountain Power asked Woodard & Curran, an environmental engineering
firm, to provide third-party verification of the accuracy of the
information in the report. Woodard & Curran was given access to all legal,
social, environmental and financial data in order to conduct its review.
"Green Mountain Power's values are closely intertwined with the values
of Vermont. We have reduced our dependence on fossil fuels and pursued
renewable resources. We built our Searsburg wind facility, which at the
time was the largest commercial wind plant east of the Mississippi River.
We are an organization that works hard to eliminate waste - not only of
resources, but of time and energy. This report shows our effort to become
more efficient achieves not only economic benefits, but environmental and
social ones, as well. We hope other Vermont businesses will come to see
the value in this type of disclosure and consider publishing their own
reports," said Mr.
Dutton.
